One of its kind in the world to pursue Anthropological Research in a Governmental setup The head office was shifted from Banaras to Calcutta in 1948

Anthropological Survey of India is the only research organisation to pursue anthropological research in a Governmental setup. The Anthropological Survey of India’s genesis was from the Zoological and Anthropological section of the Indian Museum, which became the Zoological Survey of India in 1916. In 1945, Anthropology section of the Zoological Survey was carved out to become the Anthropological Survey of India (An.S.I) with Dr B.S.Guha as the founding Director, in 1946.

Prof. B.V. Sharma, Director, Anthropological Survey of India, visited the Southern Regional Centre, Mysore, on 29 May 2026 to review the administrative and scientific activities of the Centre. During his visit, he interacted with all employees to understand their individual contributions and progress. He also inspected the entire SRC campus and building infrastructure to assess immediate requirements that may need to be addressed through CPWD. The Director reviewed the Zonal Anthropological Museum and discussed measures for its further enhancement and facelift. In addition, he evaluated the progress of various ongoing research projects and the associated manpower deployment at the Centre. His visit provided valuable guidance and encouragement, greatly motivating the employees and strengthening their commitment to the institution’s scientific and administrative goals. .bhallamudi

His insights offered valuable guidance for our ongoing projects and future research directions, reinforcing the lab’s commitment to excellence in interdisciplinary anthropological studies.

भारतीय मानव विज्ञान सर्वेक्षण , मुख्यालय कोलकाता एवं पूर्वी क्षेत्रीय केंद्र, कोलकाता के कार्मिकों द्वारा स्वच्छता पखवाड़े के अंतर्गत दिनांक 21/05/2026 को अपराह्न 4.30 बजे स्वच्छता अभियान का आयोजन कार्यालय परिसर में किया गया । कार्यालय के कार्मिकों ने इस सफाई अभियान में सहभागी होकर कार्यालय परिसर को स्वच्छ करने सहयोग किया ।

A four-day-long training cm workshop on "Paleopathology and Human Osteology" was formally inaugurated today at the Anthropological Survey of India Head Office in Kolkata. Dr. Sasikumar M. delivered the welcome address, followed by Director's Note introducing AnSI. by Prof. B.V. Sharma. Dr. B.P. Urade, Deputy Director, introduced the workshop, and Dr. Harashawaradhana and Dr. Abhishikta Ghosh Roy provided detailed project insights. Dr. Amit Kumar Ghosh, Deputy Director, briefed on the expected outcomes and significance of the workshop. Prof. Jagminder Sherawat imparted full-day hands-on training to the participants. The upcoming sessions will feature specialized training from Prof. K.K Basa, Dr. Aparna Dwivedi, Dr. Gwen Robbins Schug, Dr. Maanasa Raghavan, and Ruokuonuo Rose Yhome.

भारतीय मानवविज्ञान सर्वेक्षण, मध्य क्षेत्रीय केंद्र नागपुर में दिनांक 18 मई, 2026 को अंतर्राष्ट्रीय संग्रहालय दिवस का आयोजन सभी कर्मियों की उपस्थिति में किया गया। कार्यक्रम का आरंभ कार्यालय प्रधान श्री एस.एस. बारीक के स्वागत संबोधन से हुआ। इसके पश्चात आयोजित खुले सत्र में उपस्थित सभी कर्मचारियों ने संग्रहालयों के जुड़े अपने अनुभवों को संक्षेप में व्यक्त किया और इस वर्ष की थीम ‘म्यूज़ियम्स यूनिटिंग ए डिवाइडेड वर्ल्ड’ के विषय पर अपने विचार साझा किए ।

कार्यक्रम में डॉ. बिस्वजीत महापात्र, मानवविज्ञानी (शा.), श्री आर. एन. नायडू, सहायक मानवविज्ञानी (शा.) और श्रीमती श्रुति सिंह सक्सेना, अनुसन्धान सहयोगी (सां.) ने इस वर्ष के थीम पर अपने विचार प्रस्तुत किए, जिसमें सांस्कृतिक, सामाजिक और ऐतिहासिक अनेकताओं के सौंदर्य को सहेजते हुए देश को एकता के सूत्र में पिरोए रखने और साझा मानव विरासत को बढ़ावा देने में संग्रहालयों की महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका पर प्रकाश डाला । यह इन-हाउस सेमिनार सभी प्रतिभागियों के लिए एक विचारोत्तेजक अनुभव था। कार्यक्रम का समापन कार्यालय प्रमुख के संबोधन के साथ हुआ, जिसमें उन्होंने संग्रहालयों को एक ऐसा स्थायी , सार्वजनिक या निजी संस्थान बताया जो ऐतिहासिक, कलात्मक, वैज्ञानिक और सांस्कृतिक महत्व की वस्तुओं को ना केवल एकत्रित करता है बल्कि उन्हें सुरक्षित रखकर लोगों के मध्य यूँ रखता है कि आम जन उसे बड़ी सहजता और सरलता से समझ पाते हैं । अतः संग्रहालय जानता को शिक्षित करने , अनुसंधानकों को अनुसंधान में सहयोग कर, अंततोगत्वा हमारी धरोहरों के संरक्षण में सहयोग करते हैं । .bhallamudi

Anthropological Survey of India, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, celebrated the International Museum Day 2026 at the Zonal Anthropological Museum, Udaipur in hybrid mode. The Chief Guest, Prof. Col. S.S. Sarangdevot, Vice Chancellor of Janardan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth University, inaugurated one day academic session on the theme Museum uniting a divided world and highlighted the contribution of museums towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals related to inclusivity, peace, and partnerships. The inaugural address was delivered by Prof. B.V. Sharma, Director Anthropological Survey of India.
Guest of Honour Dr. Laique Hussain, Director of Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandal and special Guest Prof. Jeewan S. Kharakwal, Director, Sahitya Sansthan also graced the occasion.
The programme was organized in collaboration with West Zone Cultural Centre, Centre for Cultural Resources and Training, Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandal, and Sahitya Sansthan, Janardan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth University. Several eminent scholars and museum professionals delivered special lectures during the programme.
During the programme, renowned Geologist Shri Narendra Kavadiya donated a Zinc retort from Zawar mines to Zonal Anthropological Museum for preservation. The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Miss Meenakshi.

A month-long exhibition on ‘Poothan’, a ritual mask from Kerala, was inaugurated at the Zonal Anthropological Museum, Anthropological Survey of India, SRC, Mysuru on International Museum Day, May 18. Deputy Director Dr. Harasawaradhana and Head of Office Dr. Mithun Sikdar inaugurated the exhibit curated by Dr. Banita Behera under ‘Object of the Month’.

Poothan is a carved wooden mask used in Kerala’s ancient Poothan–Thira ritual performance, representing a divine companion of Lord Shiva who accompanies Goddess Bhadrakali. Practiced by the Mannan community in South Malabar, the ritual celebrates the victory of good over evil. The mask features wide bulging eyes, a protruding tongue, and a dramatic headdress of bamboo, peacock feathers, and mirrors. The exhibition will remain open to the public for one month. .bhallamudi

अंतर्राष्ट्रीय संग्रहालय दिवस 2026 के अवसर पर आज संग्रहालय में आगंतुकों के लिए निःशुल्क प्रवेश की व्यवस्था की गई। टैगोर गवर्नमेंट कॉलेज ऑफ एजुकेशन, श्री विजय पुरम के विभिन्न विभागों के विद्यार्थियों ने कार्यक्रम में भाग लिया तथा उन्हें संग्रहालय का निर्देशित भ्रमण कराया गया।

आज एक प्रश्नोत्तरी प्रतियोगिता का भी आयोजन किया गया, जिसमें विद्यार्थियों ने प्रथम, द्वितीय एवं तृतीय स्थान प्राप्त किया, जबकि अन्य प्रतिभागियों को तीन सांत्वना पुरस्कार प्रदान किए गए। इसके अतिरिक्त, आज संग्रहालय में आए अनेक पर्यटकों को भी पूरे दिन निर्देशित भ्रमण कराया गया।

समग्र रूप से, आज आयोजित अंतर्राष्ट्रीय संग्रहालय दिवस 2026 का कार्यक्रम अत्यंत सफल रहा, जिसके माध्यम से एएनआरसी के कर्मचारियों ने विद्यार्थियों एवं आगंतुकों को अंडमान एवं निकोबार द्वीपसमूह की जनजातीय संस्कृति को समझने और उसकी सराहना करने हेतु प्रभावी रूप से एकजुट किया। .bhallamudi
