Birati (Bengali: বিরাটি) is a neighbourhood in the North Dumdum municipality area, in the North 24 Parganas district in the state of West Bengal, India. Gate.
It is located at the east of Calcutta (now called Kolkata), beside the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at Dum Dum. It is considered to be a part of Greater Kolkata or KMA, for which KMDA is the planning and development authority. Etymology
The most popular thesis for the emergence of the name 'Birati' is the military forces used to take a rest in this place during their movements and for that place was named as biroti which means 'rest' in Bengali. Over time the name changed to 'Birati'. Geography and Locality
Birati is located at 22°39′33″N 88°26′18″E. Birati is bounded by the Jessore Road in the East, Nimta in the west New Barrackpore in the North and Durganagar in the south. Birati High School (boys'), Birati Mahajati Vidyamandir (boys', girls'), Uttar Dum Dum Vidyapith (boys', girls'), Khalisha Kota High School, Sarat Bose Academy (co-ed), Dr. Annie Besant Institute (co-ed) are some of the Higher Secondary schools. Birati is on the Sealdah–Bangaon railway line and is near to the Airport. Belgharia Expressway or popularly called Delhi Road connects Jessore Road (NH-34) at east near Airport and NH-6/NH-2 at west near Bali at Hoogly District. Trains are available for Barasat, Bongaon, Sealdah, Basirhat, Hasnabad, Dumdum directly. People can get trains for main line by going to Dumdum station by train or going to Belgharia Station by Auto Rikshaws or Bus. Indian Railway Ticket reservation is also available in Birati Station ticket counter from 10 am to 2 pm on workdays (sunday/holiday closed). At 4th February, 2009 Chief Minister of West Bengal Buddhadev Bhattyacharya inaugurated Birati Flyover named Manik Setu at Birati station. It connects east and west part of MB Road (which is the main road of Birati) opening a much waited route for buses and heavy transports. Auto Rikshaws are available from Birati station. These are 1. The seven buses that are available from the "Birati Mini Bus Stand" are: (1) Birati Mini Bus of route S-184 that runs from Birati to BBD Bag, (via VIP road), (2) 237, that runs from Birati to Babughat (via VIP Road), (3) 237/1, Birati - Babughat (via B.T. Road), (4) M2, a CTC bus (Birati - Tollygunj via Jadavpur - Santoshpur), (5) DN 2 (Barasat - Birati - Belghoria - Dunlop - Dakshineshwar), (6) Durganagar - Nayabad (near Garia) route bus of WBSTC (which is currently running between Birati More to Garia Station), 7. DN-46 Sodepur to Rajarhat Jyoti Basu Nagar (formerly New Town) . A newly opened bus Birati-Digha (from Banik More, Birati) helps people to go to distant areas.
