West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that Kolkata will be connected through a Water Metro system, making it the 18th city in India to adopt the mode of transport.

Highlighting a major maritime development push, Adhikari said the state will join the Centre's Sagarmala 2 programme and is preparing project proposals worth ₹22,700 crore over the next five years.

The proposed projects will focus on coastal fishing infrastructure, island development, maritime connectivity and logistics, while also creating new economic opportunities across the state's coastline.

Adhikari revealed that plans include the construction of 44 new jetties, an underground tunnel project, and the development of Sagar Island, where beach restoration works have already been sanctioned. He also said the government aims to transform the Sagar Mela into an internationally recognized event.

“Kolkata will get a Water Metro, and West Bengal is preparing a ₹22,700 crore maritime infrastructure roadmap under Sagarmala 2,” Adhikari said.
