πŸ‘οΈ WORLD SIGHT DAY 2026 – "LOVE YOUR EYES" πŸ‘οΈ

On Thursday, 8th October 2026, Muchinga Province joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Sight Day, with the provincial celebrations held in Mafinga District.
In line with our commitment to taking eye care services as close to the family as possible, the day featured free eye screening for members of the community and the dispensing of spectacles to those in need.

This year's theme, "Love Your Eyes," reminds us all that good vision is vital to learning, working and living well. Many causes of visual impairment can be prevented or treated when detected early.
We encourage everyone to:
βœ… Have your eyes checked regularly
βœ… Seek care early if you notice any change in your vision
βœ… Protect your eyes from injury and harsh sunlight
βœ… Bring children for eye screening, as healthy eyes support learning
We extend our sincere gratitude to the Mafinga community, our dedicated eye health workers, and all partners and stakeholders who made this celebration a success.
Your sight matters. Love your eyes! πŸ’™

MUCHINGA PROVINCE STRENGTHENS RISK COMMUNICATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT (RCCE) IN NAKONDE DISTRICT AHEAD OF PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCIES AND THE EXPECTED EL NIΓ‘O πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡²

πŸ“ Nakonde District – A High-Risk Border District.

The Muchinga Provincial Health Office, with support from the Ministry of Health, has conducted a three-day training for the Nakonde District Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) Committee.
Nakonde is one of the busiest border posts in Zambia and the highest-risk district in Muchinga Province. The border handles over 400 trucks per day from across Africa, along with high levels of cross-border trade, mobility and other activities, including s*x work. The district has faced outbreaks of cholera, mpox, measles and COVID-19 in the past. Misinformation, cross-border rumours and language barriers continue to shape behaviours that can contribute to public health emergencies.
To address these challenges, the district's multisectoral RCCE Committee plays a key role in countering harmful rumours and promoting positive health behaviours. The training equipped members with skills in:
βœ… Rumour management
βœ… Standard precautions
βœ… Risk communication
βœ… Community engagement
βœ… Community feedback
βœ… Monitoring, evaluation and reporting
βœ… Public health emergency preparedness
βœ… Preparedness for the 2026/2027 rainy season, expected to be influenced by a very strong El NiΓ±o
The training was officially opened by the District Director of Health Services, Dr. Kamizhi, who welcomed participants and emphasised the committee's vital role in changing community behaviours that drive disease outbreaks, particularly cholera. She urged members to develop a district communication plan with clear strategies.
The Committee Chairperson, Apostle Judge Chiluba, thanked the Government for investing in the committee's capacity and assured that members will continue sensitising communities through all available channels.
The committee was also encouraged to mobilise resources from local partners, the business community and other stakeholders to sustain RCCE activities in the district.
Together, informed communities are safer communities. Let us all share accurate health information and report rumours to the nearest health facility.

Strengthening Newborn Care at Community Level in Mpika District.

The Muchinga Provincial Health Office, in collaboration with the Family Health and Nutrition (FHN) Project, is currently conducting a 5-day Skills Upgrade Orientation for Community Newborn Care Agents (CNCAs) in Mpika District.
The orientation brings together 20 Community-Based Volunteers (CBVs) drawn from four health facilities: Kamwanya Health Post, Mpika Urban, Chitulika Mini Hospital and Tazara Health Post.
The training aims to equip CNCAs with practical knowledge and skills to support mothers and newborns in their communities. Topics covered include:
βœ… Identifying pregnant women in the community
βœ… Promoting early ANC, HIV testing and TB screening
βœ… Promoting births in health facilities
βœ… Home care for pregnant women
βœ… Keeping the baby warm immediately after birth
βœ… Promoting early initiation of breastfeeding
βœ… Recognising danger signs in newborns
βœ… Care of the normal baby
βœ… Care of the mother
βœ… Home visits after birth
βœ… Identifying small and very small babies
βœ… Care of the small baby
βœ… Assisting with referrals
Community Newborn Care Agents play a vital role in bridging the gap between households and health facilities. By strengthening their skills, we are improving early detection of complications, encouraging timely care-seeking, and ultimately reducing preventable maternal and newborn deaths.
The Muchinga Provincial Health Office remains committed to working with partners to ensure that every mother and every newborn receives quality care, starting right from the community.

Chinsali General Hospital Performs Muchinga Province's First Craniotomy

Chinsali General Hospital has successfully performed the first craniotomy in Muchinga Province, saving the life of a 40-year-old man with a severe head injury. The patient was admitted semi-conscious after being struck on the head with a log during an altercation, presenting with right-sided paralysis and loss of speech. A CT scan showed an extensive left parieto-temporal epidural haematoma with mild intracerebral haemorrhage and midline shift.

The patient was initially set for referral to the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, but neurosurgeon Dr. Jones Njobvu of Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital reviewed the scan and offered to operate on site. Working alongside a multidisciplinary local team and using newly acquired specialised instruments, he led the two-and-a-half-hour procedure to evacuate the clot. Within 48 hours, the patient was fully conscious and speaking normally; he has since moved from the ICU to the General Surgical Ward and is expected to make a full recovery.

Acting Head of Clinical Care Dr. Dawin Sichimba said the milestone shows the growing accessibility of surgical care in the province and underscores the value of institutional collaboration and capacity building. The achievement aligns with the government's goal of equipping district and provincial hospitals so communities can receive quality care closer to home.

Muchinga PCBVs Impress Monitors During Clinical Practicals in Their Parent Facilities

A total of 1,025 trained Polyvalent Community-Based Volunteers (PCBVs) in Muchinga Province are currently undertaking their clinical practicals in their parent health facilities, marking a key phase in preparing them to deliver quality, integrated health services at community level.
The volunteers are drawn from all eight districts of the province: Lavushimanda, Mpika, Kanchibiya, Shiwangandu, Chinsali, Isoka, Nakonde, and Mafinga. Their training has been supported by two training institutions, Michael C. Sata and Kasama College, which continue to provide technical guidance during the practical attachment.
The practical placement allows the PCBVs to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom under the supervision of experienced health workers. Working in their own parent facilities, the volunteers are gaining hands-on experience in real clinical settings. They are also building working relationships with the facility teams they will support once deployed in their communities.
Monitoring teams from Ministry of Health Headquarters, the Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ), and UNICEF have visited the districts to assess progress. The monitors expressed satisfaction with how well the PCBVs are coping with the clinical practicals. They noted the volunteers' commitment, eagerness to learn, and growing confidence in handling practical tasks.
The positive feedback is a strong sign that the programme is on track to produce a skilled and motivated community health workforce. Once fully deployed, the PCBVs are expected to strengthen the link between health facilities and communities, improve access to essential health services, and contribute to better health outcomes across Muchinga Province.
The Provincial Health Office extends its appreciation to Ministry of Health Headquarters, CHAZ, and UNICEF for their continued support. It also thanks the training institutions, facility in-charges, and clinical supervisors guiding the volunteers during this important phase.
