An interaction meeting with Dr. B. Venkateswarlu on , its impact and mitigation:

Dr. B. Venkateswarlu, National Member, NAHEP External Advisory Panel, Ex. Director, ICAR-CRIDA, Hyderabad and Former VC, Vasant Rao Naik Marathwada Krishi VidyaPeeth, Parbhani visited ICAR- IISR, Lucknow on 14th June 2024. Dr. R. Viswanathan, Director, ICAR- IISR, Lucknow welcomed him and gave a brief overview of Institute's activities. In an interaction meeting with PC, AICRP on Sugarcane, all Heads of Divisions, I/c AKMU, I/c PME Cell and Dr. T.K. Srivastava, Dr. Venkateswarlu addressed the burning problem of climate change, its impact on agriculture vis-à-vis entire humankind and the key-points to mitigate the effect of climate change. His address was followed by a hearty discussion on inculcating climate resilience in sugarcane crop. The meeting ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Sangeeta Srivastava.

Dr. Rahul Kumar Tiwari (Scientist, Plant Pathology, ICAR-IISR, Lucknow) received (NAAS) -2024 from Director General, ICAR, for his contribution to plant protection sciences. The award was given during NAAS Foundation Day and 31st Annual General Body Meeting held on June 5th 2024, at NASC, New Delhi. The Foundation Day lecture was delivered by Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, Hon’ble Former Vice President of India.

A stall was arranged by ICAR-IISR, Lucknow on June 10-11, 2024 at ICAR-NBAIM in the National Conference entitled “Expanding the Horizons of Microbial Research in Agriculture” jointly organized by Association for Conservation of Microbes & Application (ACMA) and ICAR-National Bureau of Agriculturally Important Micro-organisms (NBAIM), Mau.

DDG Crop Science (ICAR, New Delhi) Dr. T.R. Sharma, DDG-NRM (ICAR, New Delhi) Dr. S.K. Chaudhary, Director (ICAR-NBAIM) Dr. A.K. Srivastava, Director (ICAR-IISR) Dr. R. Viswanathan and Project Coordinator (S) Dr. Dinesh Singh visited the stall and appreciated the work done by the ICAR-IISR, Lucknow. More than 200 farmers, delegates, students and entrepreneurs also visited the stall. The novel and technical information for the management of insect pests and diseases and cultivation of sugarcane was shared with the farmers and delegates. The stall was arranged by Dr. Lalan Sharma, Dr. SK Goswami and Mr. Dushyant Mishra.

उत्तर प्रदेश राज्य-स्तरीय खरीफ उत्पादकता गोष्ठी -2024 एवं कृषि प्रदर्शिनी का आयोजन 12 जून 2024 को इन्दिरा गांधी प्रतिष्ठान, गोमती नगर, लखनऊ में आयोजित किया, जिसमें उत्तर प्रदेश की कृषि के विकास पर चर्चा, व्यापारिक बैठकों, संगोष्ठियाँ, कृषकों के लिए विभिन्न कार्यक्रमों के अतिरिक्त प्रदर्शिनी का भी आयोजन किया गया। प्रदर्शिनी में भाकृअनुप -भारतीय गन्ना अनुसंधान संस्थान, लखनऊ द्वारा भी एक स्टाल लगाया गया, जिसमें संस्थान द्वारा गन्ना उत्पादन की नवीनतम विकसित उत्पादन प्रौद्योगिकियों का प्रदर्शन किया गया। प्रदर्शनी में भ्रमण करने वाले किसानों, अधिकारियों तथा विकास अधिकारियों ने गन्ने की नवीनतम विकसित क़िस्मों, उत्पादन एवं रोगों एवं कीटों से बचाव करने की प्रौद्योगिकियों, बीज उत्पादन के बारे में विस्तार से जानकारी प्राप्त की। प्रदर्शिनी में संस्थान के स्टाल को श्री सूर्य प्रताप शाही, माननीय कृषि, शिक्षा एवं कृषि अनुसंधान मंत्री, उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार; श्री बलदेव सिंह औलख, माननीय कृषि, शिक्षा एवं कृषि अनुसंधान राज्य मंत्री, उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार; श्री लक्ष्मी नारायण चौधरी, माननीय गन्ना मंत्री, उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार; श्री मनोज कुमार सिंह, आईएएस, कृषि उत्पादन आयुक्त, उत्तर प्रदेश शासन, ऊपर मुख्य सचिव (कृषि), उत्तर प्रदेश शासन, श्री जितेंद्र कुमार तोमर, कृषि निदेशक, उत्तर प्रदेश ने भ्रमण किया। संस्थान के स्टाल पर डॉ. ओम प्रकाश, मुख्य तकनीकी अधिकारी ने भ्रमणकारी किसानों की गन्ना खेती संबंधी जिज्ञासाओं का उत्तर दिया। इस अवसर पर डॉ. वी. के. सिंह, प्रधान वैज्ञानिक, फसल उत्पादन विभाग ने गन्ने में फसल प्रबंधन एवं अन्तः फसलों की खेती विषय पर किसानों को एक व्याख्यान भी दिया। कार्यक्रम में प्रदेश के 600 से अधिक कृषकों तथा अधिकारियों ने भाग लिया। कृषि विभाग, उत्तर प्रदेश द्वारा आयोजित "राज्य-स्तरीय खरीफ उत्पादकता गोष्ठी -2024" के सफल आयोजन में भारत सरकार (विभागीय श्रेणी) में संस्थान ने प्रथम स्थान प्राप्त किया।

. A tissue culture lab is proposed to be set up at RC, Motipur:

A fruitful meeting took place between the ICAR-IISR, Lucknow and the SID, Patna on May 22, 2024. Representing the institute were Dr. Rasappa Viswanthan, Director, IISR Lucknow, and Dr. AK Mall, In-charge, IISR RC, Motipur. On the Govt of Bihar side, Mr. AK Jha, Cane Commissioner, along with Mr. JPN Singh and Mr. Rakesh Rajan from SID Patna, were present. The meeting proved to be highly productive. The agenda encompassed discussion on challenges in sugarcane development alongwith deliberations on the draft MoU for the BSP program. The major objective of the program is to ensure the smooth ex*****on of the program in the future.
The cane commissioner has expressed his desire to increase cane productivity. Additionally, talks revolved around mechanization of cane cultivation, establishment of modern jaggery units in Bihar and exploring avenues to enhance these initiatives. It was also proposed to organize collaborative programs in the future to effectively implement mechanized cane cultivation and to establish modern jaggery units. Additionally, ICAR-IISR proposed to establish a tissue culture laboratory to rapidly multiply disease-free seedcanes, and rejuvenation of elite varieties. Such an initiative is poised to benefit sugarcane growers and millers alike. Consensus was also reached on this proposal, and ICAR-IISR will submit the proposal to SID, Patna to establish sugarcane tissue culture lab at the Regional Centre in Motipur.

An umbrella Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed on May 10, 2024, by Dr. R. Viswanathan, Director, ICAR-Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow, and Prof. Dr. Abbas Ali Mahdi, Vice-Chancellor, ERA University, Lucknow, U.P. This MoU facilitates the sharing of scientific expertise and the exchange of research ideas in the field of cutting-edge new technologies through collaborative efforts in research, education, extension, and training related to sugarcane and allied sugar crops. The collaborative relationship forged through the agreement is expected to promote relationship building for the welfare farming community, mutual and inclusive R&D growth, and advancement in field teaching, extension, and research. The MOU signing ceremony was accomplished in the presence of faculty and staff from IISR and ERA University, Lucknow. The scientific staff present on this occasion were Dr. Tabrez Jafar, Head, Department of Biotechnology; Dr. M. Salman Khan, Associate Prof., Bio-technology; Dr. Israr, Assistant Prof., Bio-technology, ERA University; Dr. M. Swapna, Principal Scientist, Crop Improvement; Dr. S. S. The ICAR-Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow in association with NAAS- Lucknow Chapter, organized one day workshop on “Promotion of climate resilient crops/ varieties/ seeds” under Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) programme aligned with the theme of World Environment Day 2024, "Land restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience” on 26th April 2024. The importance of conserving our precious natural resources and living in harmony with nature were the main focus of the workshop. Biodiversity conservation efforts, both at the individual and community level (through green clubs and volunteer groups, for instance), are essential enablers of healthy lifestyles. Various activities are related to climate change, environmental consequences, sustainable lifestyle and simple yet effective environment-friendly actions in our daily lives. All the scientists, research associates, young professionals of IISR, Lucknow and more than 50 students from Amity University, Integral University, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University , SRM University, IT College, and SR Institute of Management and Technology, Lucknow participated in the event.

At the outset, Dr. R. Viswanathan, Director, ICAR- IISR, Lucknow and the chairman of the event addressed the participants and stressed upon adapting a lifestyle which can enhance the sustainability of the environment. He exhorted the students to utilize our natural resources in a judicious manner. A special lecture on Climate change and its effect on agriculture was delivered by the Chief guest Dr. Atul Kumar Singh, Scientist D and Head, Agro meteorology, Indian Meteorology Department, Lucknow. In this workshop, oral and poster presentation competition were organized for under graduate and post graduate students of Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Life Sciences and related subjects. The programme was attended by Project coordinator (Sugarcane), all the heads of Divisions, Dr. Sangeeta Srivastava, Dr. T. K. Srivastava, Dr. R.R. Varma, Dr. Aalok Shiv and other scientists of the Institute. Dr Manoj Srivastava, Head, Plant Physiology and Biochemistry and Coordinator of the workshop proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was conducted by Dr. Anita Savnani.

The "World Intellectual Property Day" was celebrated on 25th April, 2024 at ICAR-IISR, Lucknow. The theme of this year Intellectual Property (IP) day was IP and the SDGs: Building our common future with innovation and creativity. This event was organized by Institute Technology Management Unit (ITMU) by conducting awareness programme on IP Management. At the outset, Dr. L.S. Gangwar, Principal Scientist and I/c, ITMU welcomed Dr. R. Viswanathan, Director, IISR; Dr. Vikas Bhati, Assistant Professor, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow, Dr. Dinesh Singh, Project Coordinator (AICRP), all Head of Divisions and the participants. He also delivered talk on role of WIPO in IP regime and brief about the IP profile of institute, importance of commercialization of registered technologies and revenue generation through IP enabled technologies. The guest speaker, Dr. Vikas Bhati, delivered his lecture on “IP filing and Management”. He also discussed about the role of IP management, assessment of commercial value of IP products on actual cost value for development of technology, strategically leverage of intellectual property assets within an organization. The guest speaker has also discussed the role of IP agents/professional in writing the IP application, filing and IP protection in the area of agricultural research. Dr. Kamini Singh, Research Associate, ITMU, has also delivering a lecture on “Filing design patent: An extremely easy way to add IP in your IP profile”. She also highlighted the status of the IPRs legislations in India with illustrations. Dr. R. Viswanathan, Director, ICAR-IISR, Lucknow delivered the Chairman remarks. He gave a brief overview on the importance of intellectual property rights in agricultural research. He also highlighted about limitations which faced by the scientists in commercialization of IP owned technologies. He urged the scientists to protect first their novel innovated technologies rather than publishing research papers. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Ashwani Kumar Sharma, Principal Scientist and I/c, AKMU.

Hon'ble Secretary, Department of Agriculture Research and Education, Govt. of India & Director General, ICAR, New Delhi Dr. Himanshu Pathak visited ICAR-Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow on April 14, 2024. He laid the foundation stone of Ikshu Hostel at ICAR-IISR, Lucknow. On this auspicious occasion Dr V B Patel, ADG (Fruits and Plantation Crops); Dr. R Viswanathan, Director, ICAR-IISR Lucknow; Dr. T. Damodaran, Director, ICAR-CISH, Lucknow; Dr. Uttam K Sarkar, Director, ICAR-NBFGR, Lucknow; Dr. A.K. Dubey, Head, ICAR-CSSRI RRS, Lucknow and Dr. A.K. Singh, Academic Coordinator, IARI Lucknow hub & Head, Division of Agricultural Engineering, ICAR-IISR, Lucknow were also present.
An interaction meet of DG, ICAR and students of IARI Lucknow Hub was also organized on this occasion at ICAR-IISR, Lucknow. The programme began with a floral tribute to Bharat Ratna, Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar on the occasion of his 133rd birth anniversary. At the outset, Dr. R. Viswanathan, Nodal Director, IARI Mega University Lucknow Hub & Director, ICAR-IISR, Lucknow welcomed Dr. Himanshu Pathak and presented an overview of the academic activities of IARI Lucknow hub.
While addressing the students, faculty and other staff, Dr Himanshu Pathak said that in view of the increasing demand for quality education in the country, students need to obtain better skills and knowledge by using modern facilities available at ICAR institutes. ICAR has taken initiatives to upgrade the IARI, New Delhi as IARI Mega University by creating multiple Hubs at different locations pan India involving ICAR institutes of those locations. He appreciated the efforts taken by IISR and other ICAR institutes located at Lucknow for extending all support to the students to facilitate quality education. He emphasized to the students that there is no short cut to success and sustenance, and perseverance is the key to the success. On this occasion, DG also released the latest issue of Institute’s Rajbhasa Patrika ‘Ikshu’ and a Patent entitled “A Tractor Operated Trash Mulcher-cum-Stubble Shaver Device for Sugarcane Ratoon Crop” which has recently been granted by the Patent Office, Government of India. The programme ended with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. A.K. Singh, Academic Coordinator, IARI Lucknow Hub & Head, Division of Agricultural Engineering, ICAR-IISR, Lucknow.

One-day Farmers Training Programme on under_SC_SP_Plan at ICAR-IISR, Biological Control Centre, Pravaranagar (MS):

In the framework of the Scheduled Cast Sub Plan, ICAR-Indian Institute Sugarcane Research - Biological Control Center, Pravaranagar organized a one-day farmer training program on ‘Identification and Management of Major Sugarcane Borers’ at Krishi Vigyan farm, Bhenda, Newasa in Ahmednagar district. A total of 100 (Male-93 and Female 07) SC farmers were selected from the command area of Loknete Marutrao Ghule Patil Cooperative Sugar Factory, Ltd. Newasa for participation in this training program. The chairman of the sugar factory Hon. Dr. Narendraji Ghule Patil chaired the programme. At the outset, Dr. Dnyaneshwar Borase, Scientist & I/c welcomed the dignitaries and introduced the Scheduled Cast Sub Plan Welfare Schemes. The battery-operated knapsack sprayer along with training kits were distributed to the beneficiary farmers. Dr. Yogesh E. Thorat, the Scientist, delivered a talk on ‘Identification and Management of Major Sugarcane Borers’ with an emphasis on the use of bioagents for pest management in sugarcane at the farmer gathering. The dignitaries on the dais published the Marathi folder on the same subject. The chairman of the sugar factory expressed satisfaction with arranging the programme for the benefit of scheduled cast farmers under the factory command areas. He also requested that more such programmes be organized. Mr. Rajendra, a beneficiary farmer proposed vote of thanks expressing gratitude for the informative training session and efforts taken by the scientific and supporting staff of the center.

भाकृअनुप-​भारतीय गन्ना अनुसंधान संस्थान, लखनऊ के परिसर में भारतीय कृषि एवं खाद्य परिषद द्वारा कृषि विभाग, उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार के सहयोग से तीन दिवसीय #उत्तर_प्रदेश_एग्रोटैक_2024 का आयोजन किया गया। इसमें उत्तर प्रदेश की कृषि के विकास पर चर्चा, व्यापारिक बैठकों, संगोष्ठियों, कृषकों के लिए विभिन्न कार्यक्रमों के अतिरिक्त प्रदर्शिनी का आयोजन भी किया गया। प्रदर्शिनी में भाकृअनुप -भारतीय गन्ना अनुसंधान संस्थान, लखनऊ तथा कृषि विज्ञान केंद्र, लखनऊ द्वारा भी एक स्टाल लगया गया जिसमें संस्थान द्वारा गन्ना उत्पादन की नवीनतम विकसित उत्पादन प्रौद्योगिकियों का प्रदर्शन किया गया। प्रदर्शनी में भ्रमण करने वाले किसानों, छात्रों, वैज्ञानिकों, अधिकारियों तथा विकास अधिकारियों ने गन्ने की नवीनतम विकसित क़िस्मों, उत्पादन एवं रोगों एवं कीटों से बचाव करने की प्रौद्योगिकियों, बीज उत्पादन के बारे में विस्तार से जानकारी प्राप्त की। प्रदर्शिनी के अंतिम सत्र में श्री ब्रजेश पाठक, माननीय उप मुख्य मंत्री, उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार मुख्य अतिथि के रूप में उपस्थित थे। अंतिम सत्र में भारतीय गन्ना अनुसंधान संस्थान, लखनऊ को सर्वश्रेष्ठ स्टाल के पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया। संस्थान की ओर से यह पुरस्कार संस्थान के निदेशक, डॉ. रासप्पा विश्वनाथन की उपस्थिति में संस्थान के प्रतिनिधि, डॉ.ओम प्रकाश ने प्राप्त किया।
