(SSPE) Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis: Dr Neal Kasbe

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), commonly referred to as Dawson disease, represents a rare and progressive form of brain inflammation resulting from a chronic infection with the measles virus. This condition predominantly impacts children, adolescents, and young adults. Estimates suggest that approximately 2 out of every 10,000 individuals who contract measles will subsequently develop SSPE. Notably, a 2016 study indicated that the incidence among unvaccinated infants under 15 months could be as high as 1 in 609. Currently, there is no known cure for SSPE, and the prognosis is nearly always fatal. It is important to distinguish SSPE from acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, which may also arise from the measles virus but presents with a markedly different onset and progression.

This movement emerged from the clinical insights and theoretical developments of Sigmund Freud, an Austrian psychiatrist who introduced the term psychoanalysis.
