Breaking cultural norms is the most difficult, especially if you are a woman trying to change society's mindset. Yet, 25 years ago, Ashwini, under the strong leadership of her mother, Vasanti Deo, set out to bring about a change in the way tribals lived in Pen village of Raigad District in Maharashtra. It took many many years of communicating, convincing, educating them, and starting her mission of starting a Women's Empowerment association.

Watch Ashwini's journey here as she completes 25 years of the foundation of Ahilya Mahila Mandal.

Breaking Barriers, Creating Warriors | Ashwini Gadgil 07/01/2022

Breaking cultural norms is the most difficult, especially if you are a woman trying to change society's mindset. Yet, 25 years ago, Ashwini, under the strong leadership of her mother, Vasanti Deo, set out to bring about a change in the way tribals lived in Pen village of Raigad District in Maharashtra. It took many many years of communicating, convincing, educating them, and starting her mission of starting a Women's Empowerment association.

There was a time when she had to pick and drop the women from far-off villages to come and work at the employment wing, which has now become an independent organization, funding and providing for the women and their families.

It takes grit, determination, and passion to continuously take on challenge after challenge, manage a girls hostel, a lab, and an old age home. But Ashwini and her mother are made of iron. As they tend after their inmates, so do they change one mind after another.

They have made true the saying, "If you educate a man, you educate one person. But if you educate a woman, you educate an entire community."

“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself"

The coronavirus lockdown has not only forced the entire world indoors but has put India’s four-legged strays in extreme distress. The unavailability of food and water in the scorching summer is impacting stray animals all over the country. Dogs who do not have dedicated feeders suffer because even production of garbage from eateries has stopped and meat shops which were their favourite places to hover around have shut in Covid-19 times.

Showcasing love and affection towards stray animals, Farheen Kausar, Shivam Dixit & Avinash Kumar, Students of IIM Amritsar are feeding stray dogs for a long time. Let's laud them for their effort and such an act of kindness is an inspiration for all of us, to do our bit!!

"A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees"

“The future depends on what you do today… Without action, you aren’t going anywhere"
From a very young age, Girish was introduced to many inspiring social workers and leaders who followed Gandhian principles.
Inspired by how Mahatma Gandhi served the poorest of the poor, Girish decided that he would be the torch bearer of change that would transform the lives of women in red light area so that they too can live with dignity. This led to the birth of Snehalaya.
Mahatma Gandhi's teachings had a lasting impression on his mind and have been pertinent to his decisions that have shaped Snehalaya foundation to what it is today.

“Live with them, feel their problems, their struggles then only will you understand their small world”. Dr. Ashish Satav had finished his MBBS and MD and chose to go to Melghat to live with them and help the poor tribals individuals. With no power and no clinical gear, he still assisted the individuals with health-related treatment. With only one goal in heart, he fought his battle.

There was a time when women and business were a complete NO NO! In a time like this, Chumki dared to dream of becoming a business woman. And with full determination and zeal she simply charged towards her dream. She started off with her advertising agency and turned Mastermind into the top 10 agency of Orissa. She even delved into the hospitality sector through her Excel Guest House, at a time when the concept was still alien to her city. Life was at its best for her. But the hands of the clock turned and she met with a terrible accident that paralyzed her for life. But this was just the beginning of her miseries She lost her biggest support- her husband, and her business was hijacked and taken away. To her, the future seemed blurred. She was standing at the most crucial crossroad of her life, where she had just 2 options- crib about what has happened or bounce back to life. She opted for the 2nd path. She decided to do something for the differently-abled community, to train them with vocational training so that they can work and become independent in their life. Seeing those children finally having their own livelihood gave her immense joy.- “At that moment, I knew I have found my true happiness and true meaning of my life.”

From water water everywhere, the world is moving towards, water nowhere. There is a dire urgency to focus on this issue and SAVE water for the future. How often do we come across a leaking tap and turn a blind eye towards it, saying its just a drop of water? But for Aabid this was a serious issue. Having grown up in the pavement, from his childhood he has seen fights over 1 bucket of water. However, there is solution to every problem. And Aabid knew that for this problem the solution was rather simple- Just hire a plumber and fix it. He started visiting the flats in his locality and fixed the leaking taps of people, for free. At first some people were bit hesitant, but his efforts helped them realize and made them aware. Now they manage the flow of water as per their requirements. And like this, Aabid helped save 2million litre of water. His journey proves that, change requires only a small step from all of us. In Aabid’s words-“If you do one good deed with full transparency, with absolute honesty, God walks with you on that path, HE becomes your fundraiser”.
