Remembrance

Today, 22nd March 2026, marks ten years since the Brussels terror attacks. We honor the victims and stand with all those whose lives were forever changed.

Across Brussels, memorials stand quietly as symbols of remembrance.

We also think of the survivors, whose strength continues long after the moment has passed.

On 22nd March 2016, Nidhi Chaphekar, an Indian cabin crew manager, had been assigned to a flight from Brussels to Newark. She was gravely injured in the attack, and a photograph taken moments afterwards came to symbolize the tragedy. In her book Unbroken, she shared her story - a powerful testament to courage, determination, and the resilience of the human spirit. Through her words, she offers a message of hope and the enduring capacity to overcome even the darkest of circumstances.

"When you surround yourself with love and optimism, you can mould any situation in your favour. The path ahead of you may be long and dark, and the walk will be slow, but when you keep walking, you will reach your destination. the trick is to never give up." (Nidhi Chaphekar, Unbroken)

And while Belgium may be thousands of kilometers away, the spirit of Holi travels far. Across Belgium, Indian communities and friends of India come together each year to celebrate with colours, music, and shared festivities. These celebrations continue later in the year. In August, Parc du Cinquantenaire in Brussels comes alive with colour-filled gatherings inspired by this festival of colours.
