The most significant election of the five states which went to the polls in India in April was that of West Bengal. The state, once India’s trading hub and entrepreneurial centre, now lags its counterparts. The big battle was fought between the regional Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, both of which pulled out their big guns and were wooing the state’s voters as never before.
India’s most strategically located eastern state has decided its fate and just before that, Manjeet Kripalani, Executive Director, Gateway House, visited the poll-bound state and wrote about the ground realities.

Does UN receive private funding and how does it affect the system?
Over the years, member-states have either stopped paying their dues or have been withholding. As the size and mandates of UN increase, it requires more funding, this eventually created a financial vaccum which is now filled by philanthropies, who have their own agenda which doesn’t align with UN’s agenda. The top philanthropic donors include The Global Fund, Gates Foundation, Gavi Alliance.
Our latest report examines the top eight UN agencies which receive the largest amount of philanthropic donations between 2019 and 2024 and links the agenda between the UN and its donors.
The report also raises a critical question: have UN agencies become an extended arm of private interests?

On April 17th, 2026, Gateway House, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Bombay, hosted a discussion titled “Tehran Rising: The War in West Asia and Its Impact on India” featuring Mr. Burzine Waghmar, Senior Fellow at the USANAS Foundation and Faculty Member at the Centre of Iranian Studies, SOAS University of London. The discussion was moderated by Ms. Sifra Lentin, Bombay History Fellow at Gateway House and author of Salute to the Sword Arm.
This discussion provided a comprehensive understanding of Iran’s internal political landscape and its rich diversity while delving into critical dimensions, including the leadership of Ayatollah Mojtaba, Iran’s nuclear capabilities, and its strategic relationships with Gulf States. Special emphasis was placed on the India-Iran bilateral and the broader implications of regional conflict on India as well as globally.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman visited India from April 7-9, consolidating the reset of the bilateral relationship.
After 15 years of bilateral warmth, often termed the ‘golden chapter’ during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s long tenure in power, relations quickly turned southward following her ouster in August 2024.
