On This Day | 5 November 1951 🚂

A remarkable coincidence in Mumbai’s railway history!

Central Railway and Western Railway were both formed on this day, 75 years ago.

Central Railway emerged from the erstwhile Great Indian Peninsular (GIP) Railway, while Western Railway was formed through the merger of the Bombay, Baroda and Central India (BB&CI) Railway and other state railways.

Two railway zones, two historic legacies, and millions of journeys every day.

Did you know? The history of bonus payments in India has strong roots in Mumbai’s textile mills!

During World War I, in 1917, Mumbai’s textile mill workers received a 10% ‘War Bonus’ to compensate for rising living costs. It was increased to 15% in January 1918.

By December 1919, mill owners had sanctioned annual bonus payments for workers.

And there’s a Diwali connection too! A 1962 Supreme Court judgment documented a Mumbai workplace practice of paying workers a month’s basic wages around Diwali, dating back to at least 1940.

For generations of workers, that extra payment meant a little more happiness at home during the festival.

This beautiful Gothic-style structure is tucked inside the JJ Hospital campus. Its pointed arches, stone façade and distinctive red-tiled gables offer a glimpse of Mumbai’s architectural past, hidden in plain sight.

30 years ago, on 1 November 1996, the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, brought his iconic HIStory World Tour to Mumbai.

The concert at Andheri Sports Complex was his only live performance in India. Thousands of fans turned up to witness a musical spectacle that remains one of the most memorable moments in Mumbai’s entertainment history.

Three decades later, Mumbai still remembers the MJ fever!

On this day, 3 November 1873, Sion Railway Station opened.

Interestingly, the first station named Sion was actually located in Kurla, near the Sarveshwar temple. Sion got its own station only 20 years later!
