AICWA strongly condemns Tanushree Dutta’s “Evil Dead” remark on the passing of legend Nana Patekar

The entire film industry and the whole country are in mourning at the passing of Nana Patekar, the Padma Shri awardee, the man who served the nation during the Kargil War, and the artist whose Naam Foundation stood by farmers’ families in distress. We pay him our humble tributes and stand with his family in their hour of grief.

At such a time, Tanushree Dutta’s statement on social media, in which she used the words “Evil Dead,” is deeply objectionable, insensitive and shameful. AICWA strongly condemns it.

To use such words for a person after his death goes against basic humanity. Until today, no one in our film industry has made such a statement after someone’s passing. You are the first, and we pray you will be the last. People in this industry know what to say on such an occasion and when to stay silent. You should have kept a check on your tongue.

You said that today is your work day, that you are going to Lucknow for a big event, and that your whole day is planned. Do your work; nobody asked you. Whether your event is in Lucknow or London, whether you focus or not, nobody is interested. On a day when the country is mourning the loss of a stalwart, speaking about your own event and your own plans reflects a very small mindset.

We pray for the peace of Nana Patekar’s soul.

A Legend Has Left Us

The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) prays that the soul of Nana Patekar rests in peace, and that his family and his countless fans find the strength to bear this loss.

The Indian film industry has lost one of its greatest sons. Nana Patekar took his last breath at his home in Goa, and with him, an entire era has come to an end today.

His contribution to Indian cinema, especially Bollywood, is so great that no one can ever measure it. His acting was the finest in every film, and his characters were always powerful. From Parinda, Krantiveer and Prahaar to Ab Tak Chhappan, Natsamrat and Welcome, he became the character so completely that the audience forgot there was an actor on screen. Who can forget the thunder of "Ek machhar saala aadmi ko hijda bana deta hai" from Krantiveer? It was the voice of the common man. And who can forget his famous line, "Kalam wali bai"? Even today, it brings a smile to every face.

But Nana was even greater as a human being. He helped people in need, and he lived among them all his life. Despite having everything, he spent his life in a small flat, living a simple life like a villager. He stayed rooted to the ground and never had a trace of ego.

Today there is a wave of shock and grief from Bollywood to the entire film industry of India. Workers, technicians, junior artists and artists are all mourning alike, because his nature was the kindest of all.

I have no words for this loss. Nana, you will always be remembered. As long as this world exists, the name of Nana Patekar will live on.

The industry will never forget your contribution, and the country will never forget you, because you were truly one of a kind.

SRFTI Students in Danger: AICWA Demands Action from Honourable Home Minister

The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has written to Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah ji about the safety of students at the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata.

• 4 Oct 2026: SRFTI attacked again. The campus gate was broken in front of the police while students were inside.

• 27 Sept 2026: 30+ students and faculty injured. Students were attacked with knives, and female students were harassed. The ambulance carrying the injured was stopped outside the gate.

• SRFTI is a central government institute under the I&B Ministry, so its students’ safety is the Centre’s responsibility.

• The West Bengal government has failed to prevent the repeat attack.

Our demands:

1) Full safety for students, faculty and staff.

2) Strictest action against everyone involved in both attacks.

3) Strict legal action against those who harassed female students.

4) Inquiry into police inaction and the blocked ambulance.

5) High-level inquiry into who planned and funded the attacks.

SRFTI students are the future of Indian cinema. Save the students. Save the future of Indian cinema.

Film City Fire: Negligence Has Become a Habit, and Workers Pay With Their Lives�
AICWA demands FIR against channel, producer and production house, and resignation of Film City Managing Director

Mumbai, 05 October 2026: A fire broke out around 4:00 PM today on the set of Colors channel's reality show Pati Patni Aur Panga Season 2, built inside Prime Focus Studio at Film City, Goregaon.
Thousands of workers and artists work in this complex every day, and today's fire is yet another warning that their lives are being treated as expendable.

Fires in Film City are not accidents. They happen year after year, and lives are lost each time. The reason is simple: producers, channels and production houses cut corners on fire safety to save money, and nobody stops them.

There were no fire safety arrangements whatsoever on the set of Pati Patni Aur Panga Season 2, which is why the fire broke out and spread. A large number of workers and artists were working on a set that had been left completely unprotected.

Suresh Shyamlal Gupta, President, All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA), has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis with the following demands:

1A thorough, time-bound inquiry into how the fire started on the Pati Patni Aur Panga set, and why no fire safety arrangements were in place.
2An FIR for negligence against the channel, the producer and the production house of the show.
3The resignation of the Managing Director of Film City, who bears full responsibility.

"These studios stand inside Film City, and the management knew well that sets were running without basic fire safety. Not a single fire safety measure was in place on this set. This is not an accident, it is criminal negligence. Every day thousands of workers and artists put their lives at risk on these sets. When a fire breaks out, the people who suffer are the poor workers, not the channels and producers who profit. This cannot go on. Accountability must be fixed at the top, and those responsible must face the law," said Suresh Shyamlal Gupta.

AICWA also urges the government to make fire audits, on-set fire safety staff and firefighting equipment mandatory for every shoot in Film City, with licences cancelled for any production that fails to comply.

AICWA will not stay silent until the lives of cine workers are given the safety they deserve.

🎬 SAVE CINEMA. SAVE LIVELIHOODS.

The proposed 570% hike in cinema entertainment tax by the BMC could put Mumbai’s cinema halls under severe financial pressure and threaten the livelihoods of thousands of film industry workers.

After COVID-19, cinema halls have been struggling to bring audiences back to theatres. Just as people are gradually returning to the big screen, such a steep tax increase could make cinema more expensive for audiences and push more viewers towards OTT platforms.

Will this proposed tax hike help theatres survive, or make their survival even more difficult?

AICWA strongly urges the Maharashtra Government and the BMC to reconsider the proposal and withdraw the proposed tax hike in the interest of cinema halls, film workers, exhibitors and audiences.
