Conferring the highest civilian award of the nation, on a person who has played an important role in spreading communal division in the country, at such a juncture in the history, is a worrying sign about the path we are headed on. We condemn this act.

IITs and IIMs follow the same templates, first reject candidates and then de-reserve the posts and appoint savarnas. RTI reply from shows that they did not recruit a single SC ST faculty in 2 years of MMR. Why is not taking action.

A line of events being carried out on campus by the IITB administration shows that it has started crawling in front of Hindutva political forces, giving up on the principle of Secularism in the Indian Constitution.

The institute has reportedly given permission to a procession called "Shriram darbar shobha yatra" happening on 21st January in campus. The Director will be inaugurating a Goshala on 22nd. Another musical event called "Ramdhun" will be happening on 20th.

Very recently though the institute had declared that its shall "remain apolitical in all its endeavors," and has been using the new guidelines to cancel and censor several academic talks and gatherings on campus.

We condemn the surrender of this institute in front of the right wing political forces while on the other hand it continues to suppress any activity by the independent student collectives.

A group of students came together today, near the Ambedkar Statue in the main building to celebrate Savitribai Phule's birth anniversary by reading some of her poetry.

Savitribai was remembered by reciting and discussing her works in which she encourages the dalit shudra and atishudra castes to claim their dignity through education.

Savitribai Published her first poetry collection "Kavya P**e" as early as in 1854. She encouraged dalit women to go to school at a time when women were disallowed from getting an eduction. Given the social context in which she wrote he work is both "modern" and "radical".

Earlier in the day, a talk on the topic "Savitribai Phule: the radical modern poet" was suddenly canceled due to "unforeseen circumstances."

It has come to our notice that Prof. Ashish Kumar Sen from mechanical engineering has been suspended following the recommendations of the external inquiry committee on the su***de of Sachin Kumar Jain.

Ashish Sen was the PhD supervisor of Sachin, who died by su***de on March 31st this year. Following his su***de, there have been allegations against his supervisor from his friends and family members. Sachin's brother had earlier given a written complaint to the director asking for a thorough investigation of his death. A few days after his su***de, students took up this issue and protested on campus, demanding to constitute an external inquiry committee. Later, a five-member committee including a student representative, was formed by the institute. The committee carried out a detailed inquiry and submitted their findings and recommendations to the director in the month of August.

IIT has confirmed to the media that the current suspension of Ashish Sen is according to the decision of the Board of Governors based on the inquiry report that was presented before them.
We congratulate the students for joining together and demanding such an important and legitimate demand to form an external committee. We also appreciate the IITM administration's efforts in constituting the committee considering the collective voice of the students. It is our stand that the proper functioning of such unbiased committees is essential for truth to come out and for the students to have trust in the system.

We also demand that the inquiry report be made available to the students and implement other recommendations regarding the mental well-being of the students.
