Tucked away in the western state of Gujarat, Gir National Park stands as a shining symbol of IndiaтАЩs dedication to wildlife conservation. Unparalleled in its significance, Gir is the only place in the world outside Africa where lions live and roam freely in the wild.

The Asiatic lions of Gir are a majestic subspecies, distinguished by features such as a bushier tail tassel, prominent belly folds, elbow tufts, and a slightly shorter mane than their African counterparts. With an average body length of 2.75 meters, these regal beasts are the very heart of GirтАЩs wild identity.

Declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1965, Gir stretches over 1,412 square kilometers of dry deciduous forest, open scrublands, and rugged hills. At a time when the Asiatic lion population had plummeted to a mere 20 individuals in 1913, Gir became their last refuge. Thanks to unwavering conservation efforts, the population has now grown to over 500 lions, marking one of the worldтАЩs most successful wildlife recoveries.
