Juanita Castro, Fidel's sister, will not attend funeral: report

| Avaiz Tazim Ahmed
: Nov 27, 2016, - Miami

She has been living in Miami since 1964, and said she cooperated with a CIA plot to oust Fidel.

A sister of late Cuban leader Fidel Castro who has lived in Miami for decades, will not attend his funeral.

Miami: Juanita Castro, a sister of late Cuban leader Fidel Castro who has lived in Miami for decades, will not attend his funeral, local media reported Saturday.

"Given unhealthy rumors that I was headed to Cuba for the funeral, I want to state clearly that I have never returned to the island, and I don't plan to do so," Castro told El Nuevo Herald.

"I'm not rejoicing in any human being's death, nor would I do that with someone who shares my family names," she went on. "As Fidel's sister, I am going through the loss of a human being who shared my blood."

President Raul Castro, Fidel's 85-year-old younger brother, made the announcement of Fidel's death on state television around midnight Friday.

Fidel and Cuban President Raul Castro were among their parents' seven offspring. Juanita, born in 1933, was the only one to publicly oppose the Communist regime her brother led for over five decades.

She has been living in Miami since 1964, and said she cooperated with a CIA plot to oust Fidel.

Former US Treasury Secretary faults Modi’s demonetisation drive..

| Avaiz Tazim Ahmed
: Nov. 22, 2016 - Washington

Washington: Coming down heavily on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demonetisation drive, former US Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers not just doubts the lasting benefit of the “chaos-causing” currency reform, but feels it has resulted in “loss of trust” in the government, even as it will be unable to prevent corruption.

The move also has also unleashed chaos and goes against the spirit of free societies that call for several criminals to go scot free, than convict an innocent person, Summers writes in a blog with Natasha Sarin, a Ph.D. candidate in Economics at Harvard University.

“This is by far the most sweeping change in currency policy that has occurred anywhere in the world in decades,” says the blog, expressing surprise at the dramatic action to demonetise Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes.

“It is the imminent prospect of notes currently held becoming worthless that has created such alarm and disruption in India. Small and medium-sized merchants have seen their shops (which transact mostly in cash) deserted and ordinary Indian citizens have spent the last week in line outside banks hoping to be able to exchange their cash holdings for legal tender,” it says.

Summers says even as many people hold large quantities of ill-gotten cash in India, raising the temptation to expropriate such assets, there are also those who have come by their wealth legally and have nothing to fear in exchanging the old notes for new ones.

“Most free societies would rather let several criminals go free than convict an innocent man. In the same way, for the government to expropriate from even a few innocent victims who, for one reason or another, do not manage to convert their money is highly problematic,” he says.

“Moreover, the definition of what is illegal or corrupt is open to debate given the commercial practices that have prevailed in India for a long time,” says Summers, also a former Chief Economist of the World Bank.

The blog also goes on to question the equity and efficacy of the move and says there are strong possibilities that the largest amount of ill-gotten wealth is not held in cash but in foreign exchange, gold, bitcoin (digital currency) or some other store of value.

“So it is petty fortunes, not the hugest and most problematic ones, that are being targeted,” he says adding: “Without new measures to combat corruption, we doubt that this currency reform will have lasting benefits. Corruption will continue albeit with slightly different arrangements.”

On balance, he says, one was not enthusiastic previously about the idea of withdrawing existing notes from circulation because the costs were perceived to exceed the benefits. “The ongoing chaos in India and the resulting loss of trust in government fortify us in this judgement.”

Indian-origin girl Raheela Ahmed wins key local election in the US..

: Nov. 22, 2016 - Washington

Washington: A Muslim-American girl, whose parents are from India and Pakistan, has won a key local election in the US state of Maryland which was dominated by anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim rhetoric.

, 23, won the school board race in Prince George’s county of Maryland by defeating a long-time system administrator by an impressive 15 per cent vote difference.

She had unsuccessfully run for this position four years ago in 2012. Her father is from India and mother from Pakistan. Her victory gains significance as her district has 80 per cent of African-American population.

She was endorsed by the former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steel.

“It’s interesting that onthe same day Donald Trump was elected as president of the US, I as a hijabiMuslim youngwoman was also elected to serve in a public office. I think that speaks volumes about the diversity of American opinion, and that American dream is still well and alive,” Ahmed said.

“I’d like to act as a form of inspiration for other minoritiesthat they can achieve what they will, given prayer, circumstance and hard work. This win would not have been possible without the support and belief that otherpeople had in me,” she said.

“For my youngminority women, please know that atthe end of the day, you are worthy of your highest inspirations. You have to believe that you areable to achieve them, even if societal structures do not yet allow for that. Because one day, thoseglass ceilings WILLbreak. And who knows?” Ahmed said.

Racist post against Michelle causes outrage..

| Avaiz Tazim Ahmed
: November 16, 2016 - Washington

A racist Facebook post about U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama has caused a major controversy involving a town Mayor in the U.S. State of West Virginia.

Pamela Ramsey Taylor, who runs a local non-profit group in Clay County, referred to President Barack Obama’s wife as an “ape”.

“It will be refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady in the White House. I’m tired of seeing a ape in heels,” Ms. Taylor said. Local Mayor Beverly Whaling responded by telling: “just made my day Pam”. The Washington Post and New York Daily News reported that Ms. Taylor was removed from her position on Monday.

She told local news outlet WSAZ, which first carried the story, that she acknowledged her post could be “interpreted as racist, but in no way was intended to be”, and that she was expressing a personal opinion on attractiveness, not the colour of a person’s skin. She told the channel that she was considering legal action for slander against unnamed individuals.

In a statement given to the Washington Post, Mayor Whaling said: “My comment was not intended to be racist at all” and apologised for the comment “getting out of hand.”

“I was referring to my day being made for change in the White House! I am truly sorry for any hard feeling this may have caused! Those who know me know that I’m not of any way racist!” she said.

Owens Brown, director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People West Virginia chapter, said it was “unfortunate that people still have these racist undertones“.

“Unfortunately, this is a reality that we are dealing with in America today. There’s no place for these types of attitudes in our state.”

West Virginia Democratic Party Chairwoman Belinda Biafore issued an apology to Michelle “on behalf of my fellow Mountaineers”, referring to a nickname for inhabitants of the state.
