In May 2011, Jenny Rang, an undergraduate student, was working on an organic chemistry research project with Professor David Rusterholz of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. She had synthesized (E)-N-(2-methoxyphenyl)-3-(3’-nitrophenyl)propenamide and extracted it into an organic solvent. She left a small portion of the organic solution floating on the water layer in a beaker in her hood overnight. The next day, Rang and Rusterholz noticed that as the solvent evaporated, it left this leaf-shaped cluster of light-green crystals of the compound.
