In 1915 changed to Greer Bhumihar Brahman College , had started first the negotiation for its take –over by Government. Till about 1949 the name continued, but an agitation was made by the public soon afterwards for a further change. I was at that time a member of the Managing Committee of the College when the subject was taken up for discussion. There were three groups of members. One said it sho
uld be called Vaisali College : the other, of which Principal Fazlur Rahman was the mover, proposed that it should be Muzaffarpur College . ‘Syed Abdul Majid’ (A poet, a critic and a social worker and connection with the Congress & reputed teacher of his time.) individually suggested that it should be Langat Singh College , so that the name of the founder be associated with it. Votes were taken: two gentlemen voted for Vaisali, and two for Muzaffarpur College , and two were for Langat Singh College . The president, Mr. Lal, who was the Commissioner of the Division, gave his casting vote for Langat Singh College . College a true academia possessed of originality, authenticity, dedication and distinction- the qualities imparted to it by the teachers of caliber, excellence and inspiration.
“ Bihar University ” is an expansion of L. College , which for long years, functioned as the academic headquarters of the University. Most University departments were contained in L. College until their bifurcation in 1979 where after, in 1984 postgraduate centers were again west up at this College. It is the alumnai of L. S.College who, as teachers, fed up colleges that subsequently sprang up in different places in North Bihar & Nepal. The products of this college also filled up administrative services under the state. College has been the premiere institution and the embryonic centre of University.
1915 proved a landmark in the history of the College. It was in this year that it was rechristened as Greer Bhumihar Brahman College , and ‘Mr. Khosla’, Professor of History in Ravenshaw College joined as its Principal. It was under him that the construction of the magnificent building was started. After its completion the building was inaugurated by the Governor of Bihar, Sir Henry Wheeler on July 26, 1922. Mr. J. Armour, earlier Professor of English at Patna , University assumed office as the last European Principal of the College. In its burgeoning years the College was affiliated to Calcutta University , as then Bihar was part of Bengal Presidency and there was nothing known as Patna University . Greer, the then Commissioner of Tirhut Division took keen interest in the development of the College and saw to it that its architecture was modeled after the Balliol College of Oxford. Hence the prefix ‘Greer’ in the name of the College.
