A writer and journalist, Alexandra Lucas Coelho is based in Portugal. She has published 14 books, both fiction and non-fiction. Her first novel, And the Night Spins (2012), won Portugal's most prestigious award (APE). Her latest non-fiction book, Lebanon, Labyrinth (2021), was awarded the Oceanos Prize, the most important for a Portuguese-language book in any country. Her second novel was published in France and some of her works have been translated into English, German, Italian, Spanish and other languages. As a journalist, she has worked for radio and the newspaper Público, covering various conflicts, including the Middle East, Central Asia, Latin America and the former USSR. She was a correspondent in Jerusalem and Rio de Janeiro. She has a program on books for the national broadcast and is currently an international affairs columnist for Público.
Mumtazz (2020) is a short memoir with watercolors. It was written as a tribute to a Portuguese alternative artist who passed away prematurely in 2019, and had chose Mumtazz as her artistic name, adding a z to Princess Mumtaz's name. This book links the author personal memories both of Mumtazz, the artist, and of a journey in Afghanistan, starting with Babur, the founder of the Mughal dynasty. Other places of the Mughal empire are invoked, including India. Sometimes, in the middle of the text, she draws watercolors linking memories and places.
Afghan Notebook (2009) is a diary/reportage/travel book in the midst of the wars in various parts of Afghanistan in 2008. Extensive parts of it were published in German in the magazine Lettre International.
The author is currently working on a novel, A Room in the Indian Ocean, with various connections to India and Portuguese colonial history, including Camões and Vasco da Gama. It will be published in 2025 in Portugal, by Editorial Caminho/Leya, her publishing house.

First Portuguese Cinema Course description:
On the 50th Anniversary of the military (and peaceful) coup that overthrew the Portuguese Dictatorship, ending the last European colonial empire, we are going to look back at the filmic portrayal of this transition between eras. This selection intends to focus on the Portuguese Cinema of the 20th Century, with only three avant-garde movies that premiered at the end of the previous century, one fiction and two documentaries. Besides history of Portugal and of the Portuguese Cinema, the participants will gain new tools on how to critically address movies and think about cinema. In each session we will see a different film, presented by João Ribeirete and debated with all participants.
