Pench – Land of the Jungle Book and Mougli
Pench National Park is named after the Pench river in the Seoni district of Madhya pradesh.
It is the panoramic beauty of this region that has been described as early as the beginning of the 20th century by naturalists like Captain J. Forsyth in 'Highlands of Central India' and by Rudyard Kipling in the 'Jungle Book'.
The Pench Tiger Reserve and its neighborhood is the original setting of Rudyard Kipling's most famous work
Kipling borrowed heavily from Robert Armitage Strendale's books 'Seonee', 'Mammalia of India and Ceylon' and 'Denizens of the Jungle' for the topography, wildlife, and its ways. Mowgli was inspired by Sir William Henry Sleeman's pamphlet, 'An Account of Wolves Nurturing Children in Their Dens' which describes a wolf-boy captured in Seoni district near the village of Sant Baori in 1831. Many of The Jungle Book's locations are actual locations in Seoni District, like the Waingunga river with its gorge where Sherkhan was killed, Kanhiwara villlage and the 'Seeonee hills'.

The tiger, leopard and dhole (Indian Wild Dogs) are the predators who claim fiefdom in Pench. The sloth bear and the leopard cat coexist with the four-horned antelope and mouse deer. Spotted deer, sambar, barking deer, nilgai and wild pigs may also be encountered.

Dachigam National Park in Kashmir:
The beautiful national park is the natural habitat of the endangered Hangul or Kashmir stag - the only species of Red Deer to be found in India. Dachigam is also one of the best places to watch Himalayan black bears.
Mesmerizing forests, captivating scenery, verdant mountains, deep ravines, steep wooded slopes, and rolling alpine meadows laced with glacier-fed streams all come together to create a picture that has few comparisons.

The Periyar reservoir is the dominating feature of Periyar Tiger Reserve.
The Periyar river originating from the evergreen forest merges in the reservoir catchment area before proceeding to meet the Arabian sea 250 km onwards. Rolling green hills, tropical evergreen forest patches interspersed with grasslands and marshy flatlands .
Periyar is a tiger reserve and prime elephant country and large herds are commonly sighted near the lake shore foraging or playing in the water. Gaur or wild buffalo can be seen grazing along the hillsides during treks and one may also encounter playful Malabar squirrels here.

Little Rann of Kutch
Probably the largest wild life sanctuary in India with an area of approx 4950 sq. KM, Little Rann of Kutch is one of the most remarkable and unique landscape of its kind in the entire world and renowned for the Asiatic Wild Ass Sanctuary.
A flat limitless expanse of dry, cracking mud, with clumps of bushes. The enormous sense of open space one experiences here is surreally mind boggling.

Elephants in Bandhavgarh
During a visit to Bandhavgarh, we were mock charged by this handsome bull in the Tala zone. We also saw three groups of elephants with small calves.
This was unimaginable even a few years back, as there were no elephants in Bandhavgarh or in any other central or Western Indian forests.
After more than a century, elephants have returned to the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh.
The first herd — around 15— was spotted, in 2018. Now there are about 80 who have taken residence in Bandhavgarh National Park.
Traditionally known for its population of Royal Bengal Tigers, Bandhavgarh is a biodiverse park that includes species such as leopards and deer. It has four tiger corridors, a core area (700 plus square kilometers) with dense forests and the buffer area (822 square kilometres) with a mix of human habitation. The biggest challenge being faced by the changed scenario is the local community’s unfamiliarity with elephants.
