International Council for Organic Food Processors welcomes the announcement today by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and FAO Director-General QU Dongyu of the appointment of Cindy McCain of the United States as Executive Director of the World Food Programme.

Currently, Cindy McCain serves as the United States Permanent Representative to the UN Agencies in Rome (the Food and Agriculture Organization, the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the World Food Programme).

McCain’s appointment continues America’s legacy of leadership in the fight to end global hunger and we look forward to working with her to rally American leaders and donors to join our anti-hunger movement.

Organic food processing

Organic Food processing refers to the methods used to convert organic agricultural products into marketable food products while adhering to organic farming principles and practices. Organic farming is a holistic approach that emphasizes the use of natural inputs, soil fertility management, and ecosystem-based pest and disease management.

Organic food processing starts with the selection of high-quality organic raw materials. The raw materials may undergo various processing steps such as sorting, washing, grading, and packaging. Organic processing methods may include physical, mechanical, and biological methods such as grinding, juicing, baking, fermentation, and drying.

In organic food processing, the use of synthetic chemicals such as fertilizers, pesticides, preservatives, and genetic modification is prohibited. Organic processors may use approved organic inputs such as natural fertilizers, organic pest control measures, and natural food preservatives.

Organic food processors must comply with strict regulations and standards set by organic certification agencies such as the USDA National Organic Program (NOP), European Union (EU) Organic Standards, and the Canadian Organic Regime. Organic processors are audited regularly by certification agencies to ensure compliance with organic standards.

Organic food processing is an essential component of the organic food supply chain, providing consumers with a range of organic food products that are healthy, sustainable, and environmentally friendly. Organic food processing promotes the preservation of natural resources, biodiversity, and the health and well-being of farmers, workers, and consumers.
