Government’s Response on Pulwama Press Club is Disheartening" – JKNDP

PULWAMA, July 10: The Jammu & Kashmir National Democratic Party (JKNDP) today expressed deep disappointment and outrage over the Central Government's Ministry of Information & Broadcasting rejecting the demand to establish a 'Press Club' in District Pulwama. The party termed the government’s stance as a severe blow to the fundamental rights and welfare of the local journalistic fraternity.

It is pertinent to mention that the Press Section of the Jammu & Kashmir National Democratic Party had sent an official communication to the Union Ministry on June 22, 2026, strongly advocating for a well-equipped and secure Press Club for journalists in the Pulwama district. In its response via letter reference No. S-15011/24/2023-Press, the Ministry stated that the Government of India has no policy or scheme for establishing Press Clubs, nor does it fall under their official mandate or protocol. Shifting the entire burden, the government has left it to the private efforts of local media professionals under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.

"It is deeply unfortunate and ironic that while we proudly hail the media as the fourth pillar of democracy, the government has buried the critical issue of their infrastructure and safety under the guise of 'protocols and rules'. In a sensitive region like Pulwama, where journalists risk their lives daily to report from the ground, rejecting a legitimate demand for a Press Club on mere technicalities exposes the government's indifferent and irresponsible attitude."

The Jammu & Kashmir National Democratic Party firmly asserts that an institutional platform and a secure workspace for Pulwama's journalists is not a luxury or a privilege—it is an absolute necessity for fair and transparent journalism. If the government's existing policy protocols have no room for the welfare and infrastructural development of the nation's media persons, then it highlights a systemic failure of the current administration.

JKNDP will not stay silent on this issue. We stand completely committed to safeguarding the interests of our journalist brothers and the entire media fraternity across District Pulwama and Jammu & Kashmir. The party strongly condemns this disappointing decision and demands that the government immediately rectify its policies. We will continue to raise this rightful demand at every platform, and our voice will remain resolute until the journalists of Pulwama receive the dignity, security, and institutional support they rightfully deserve.
