Coming Soon: The ripening is progressing well, the lower temperatures during the day are slowing the increase in sugar levels. Today morning when I reached out to the farmer he mentioned that suddenly the sugar levels have dropped a little bit, yet he was confident of a good crop. Wine Makers keep yourself ready the grapes are on their way.

Part II: The Duoro terraces were initially inhabited by stone age people and can be traced that grapes were grown 20 thousand years ago and wine was produced 4 thousand years BC. While the Romans came and started focusing on agriculture, you can see that there are various types of terraces and their capability and style has changed based on the machinery eg. In stone age there were humans who harvested, later it was using horses, mules etc and toward the late 19th century with machines. Yet the different styles of terraces ensures that there is least soil erosion, the micro climate is protected and appropriate humidity is maintained. The terrace style decides the quality of grapes in some parts of the Douro. The ride is an amazing experience. The rocky terraces ensures that the roots go deep and extract maximum character. The terraces also ensure that no water is retained and drainage of water is appropriately taken care.

Post 1: Porto , a city in the North of Portugal. The Douro river separates the two distinct towns on either side of the river Porto and Callaici / Cale , the origin of today's Gaia, Galicia. Together it became Portugalia and later became Portugal. On the north side you have Gaia where you have the cellars -(Caves) where wines are stored, and on the other side of the river, you will find great restaurants and the Porto town that has its character. One side of the river you can feel the business orientation while on the other side its full of fun, typical touristy and got its unique character.

You can read all about Douro Valley at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douro_DOC .
The amazing terraces that potentially would help the roots go deeper and I am sure the capillary action would push the river water up. The micro climate in the valley is felt as you take the ride and boat tour. As you go away from the ocean the climate is suitable and creates more superior grapes! What I observed was that people looked at it as an art to produce the best of best! Trust me the passion is visible in each and every aspect of wine making there. The next few weeks, I will put a picture and relevance of each aspect…please follow and I am sure your next international trip will be Porto- Douro Valley
