Unnat Bharat Abhiyaan is the initiative by the government of India. Its basic aim is to lift up the villages in India, to make them progressive and to bring the vision of ‘self dependent villages’ first idealised by Father of our nation : Mahatma Gandhi into the reality.
To walk some steps closer towards this aim, College Of Engineering, Pune organised a village camp in Kusgaon for 3 days from 16 March to 18 March. During this 3 days, technically sound students and faculties of our esteemed institute interacted with villagers of Kusgoan.
During this camp we performed the activities such as offering technical solutions to the water distribution system for village Kusgaon by conducting Civil Engineering Survey. Along with this activity, students visited all the households to make the villagers aware of the Governmental schemes by displaying posters and communicating with them. Career guidance was also be given to the school students.
A meeting is held by Prof. Ranjekar in village Shivapur in which Mr. Harale, Block Development Officer, Panchayat Samiti, Bhor ; Sarpanch of Thikekarwadi, Mr. Santosh Thikekar; Dr. Kailas Bavale, Mr. Kuldip Konde, Ex Chairman, ZP Pune; Mr. Amol Pangare, Ex Sabhapati, Panchayat Samiti, Bhor were present where the concept of ideal village and the part of Engineers and citizens as a whole in making the village an ideal one was the main part of discussion.
Along with Prof. Ranjekar, UBA coordinator COEP, Chief Rector COEP; Prof. N.M. Mohite, Prof. S. M. Nawaghare, Warden Doke were also present throughout the camp to guide the UBA volunteers. Here are some glimpse of success shared by UBA Student Coordinator Miss Sayali A. Dhinge and COEP CSAC Secretary Mr. Ambarish Abgul...

History of drought in Kapshi: Kapshi was affected by a severe drought in the year 2003-04. In the following years villagers consumed most of the ground water due to which the ground water level went further down and there was shortage of even drinking water. Villagers were solely dependent on the government water tankers for drinking water supply. The water tankers had erratic schedule. At times two tankers would come together and at others none at all. There was desperate need for water.
Taking lessons form drought, village people laid foundation of rain water harvesting program. For that initially, they took reference from such projects done at Ralegansiddhi, Tal-Parner, Dist.-Ahmednagar. Villagers simply did not copy those projects but understood their own topography and according to that adopted it. These projects were done through “Shramdan”.
Art of living sessions could develop unity among them. Their efforts turned into success when they saw raising water level of public well near the 'bandhara'. Noticing this success they undertook more projects. Till today they have completed 31 such projects and 4 are under construction. They have adopted different types as per the need.
