Do you know?

Why India celebrate 26th January???

A few years ago, when asked if he knew what "Tryst with Destiny" was, some of them asked if it was the name of Beyonce's band. They confused the historic speech of Nehru at midnight with the former group Destiny's Child by Beyonce Knowles, which speaks volumes about how few modern people know our historical past.

While August 15 is celebrated as Independence Day, January 26 is the Republic Day celebrating the promulgation of the Indian Constitution. So if we were to explain it simply on August 15, 1947, it was the day the British left us, whereas on January 26, 1950, it was the day when we correctly defined the state of India and the Laws that would govern us. The reason for January 26 was that in 1930 it was the day when the Indian National Congress declared complete independence or purna swaraj.

On August 15, 1947, India was declared constitutional monarchy with George VI as head of state and Mountbatten as governor general. The laws were based on the Indian Government's 1937 law.

On August 28, 1947, a committee was appointed to draft a permanent constitution. Dr. BR Ambedkar was the chair of this committee. The Assembly will meet for 166 days over the next three years and will submit a draft to the Assembly on 4 November 1947. This committee is composed of Messrs. Munshi, Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyer, N Gopalaswami Ayengar, BL Mitter, Md Saadullah and DP Khaitan. They were assisted by the constitutional adviser Sir Benegal Narsing Rau.

Mitter then resigned and was replaced by Madhav Rao, while DP Khaitan died and was replaced by TT Krishnamachari. After lengthy deliberations, 308 members of the Assembly signed two manuscript copies of the document in English and Hindi on 24 January 1950 and entered into force on 26 January.

The main celebration is held in New Delhi in Rajpath while there are other events throughout the country.
