अमेरिका, दुबई, अफ़्रीका… विश्व के अनेक भव्य मंच देखे हैं।
किन्तु आँखें भर आईं हरिद्वार के एक छोटे से गाँव में। 🙏
इस जन्माष्टमी पर हड़ीवाला गाँव जाने का अवसर मिला। शिव मन्दिर समिति द्वारा आयोजित कार्यक्रम में मंच पर थे गाँव के नन्हे बच्चे।
न कोई प्रकाश व्यवस्था, न कोई ध्वनि विशेषज्ञ, न कोई आधुनिक तकनीक।
केवल एक साधारण मंच… और बच्चों की असीम लगन।
उस मंच पर जो अनुभव हुआ, वह करोड़ों के व्यय वाले भव्य कार्यक्रम भी नहीं दे सके।
एक बात हृदय में उतर गई —
हमारे देश में प्रतिभा की कोई कमी नहीं है। कमी है तो केवल अवसर की।
यदि इन बच्चों को उचित मंच मिल जाए, तो ये विश्व के किसी भी कलाकार के समकक्ष खड़े हो सकते हैं।

When I left India for Zambia in 2013, the reaction from most people was the same: confusion, followed by concern.

Why Zambia? Why not Singapore, the UK, or the US?

My answer then was practical. My answer now is validated.

Zambia in 2013 offered a specific combination of characteristics that made it strategically valuable for a first-time entrepreneur:

- A stable democratic government in a region where political risk was higher elsewhere
- A growing middle class with unmet demand across multiple sectors
- Almost complete absence of enterprise-grade IT service providers at an HPE level
- A significant Indian diaspora providing both network and cultural familiarity
- English as the official language — removing a significant operational barrier

None of these are romantic reasons. They are analytical ones.

12 years later, my IT company has delivered assurance work for major national banks, telecoms, and government bodies. The group has expanded into pharmaceuticals, food, construction, travel, and media.

The people who asked 'why Zambia?' in 2013 are still asking the same question about the same safe markets.

The real question was never 'why Zambia?' It was: why not the place where the gap is real?

The corporate world has produced remarkable technical leaders.

But the leaders who endure - who build institutions, not just companies - almost universally share one trait: they serve something larger than their own success.

In Sanskrit, the concept is Seva: selfless service. It appears throughout Indian philosophy not as a spiritual nicety but as a governance principle. The ruler who serves the people commands their loyalty far longer than the ruler who demands their compliance.

I have seen this play out in business.

The Managing Director who serves their team before demanding from them creates an organization that performs without being chased.
The entrepreneur who genuinely serves their market builds a reputation that survives competition and downturns.
The community leader who shows up without agenda - consistently, without cameras - earns a social capital that cannot be purchased.

Seva is not passive. It requires discipline, presence, and a willingness to invest before you receive.

But its returns - in trust, in loyalty, in durability - compound in a way no performance management system can replicate.

The Har Gaon Shakha program in Haridwar asks one question: what happens when a village shows up together, every day, for 60 minutes?

The answer is more measurable than you might expect.

Physical health improves. Daily yoga and pranayama reduce the lifestyle-disease burden quietly escalating in rural India.

Social cohesion strengthens. When people from different backgrounds gather around a shared practice - daily - the barriers thin. Not through campaigns. Through proximity and repetition.

Cultural knowledge is transmitted. Village elders who hold irreplaceable oral histories, folk knowledge, and moral frameworks, speak to youth who would otherwise never pause to listen.

Youth leadership emerges. Young people given responsibility within the shakha structure develop accountability habits that no classroom manufactures.

Addiction rates fall. When young people have structure, community, and purpose, the vacuum that addiction fills becomes smaller.

This is what 60 minutes a day, applied consistently at scale, produces.

This is the mission in Haridwar. And it is fully replicable.

The most impatient investors avoid education. The wisest ones prioritize it.

My IT consulting company is where this journey began. And 12 years later, it remains the operational spine of the group.

In 2013, I established it in Zambia with one mandate: provide enterprise-grade IT consulting to organizations that previously had no access to HPE-level technical expertise locally.

When COVID-19 hit Zambia in 2020, the Indian community did not wait for instructions.

Through a community network I have led since 2017, we coordinated the distribution of food packets, sanitizers, and medicines to affected families. We organised blood donation camps. We supported students with scholarships, school supplies, and uniforms.

Not because it was a campaign. Because it was the right thing to do.

The Indian diaspora in Africa is often measured in trade volumes and business contributions. That is real. But what does not get enough attention is the social fabric that organized Indian communities build in their host countries — quietly, consistently, and without press releases.

Our community branches now number over 10 active units across Zambia. Each one is a center of cultural preservation, community service, and youth development.

The work is not finished. But it is very much underway.

Resilience is one of the most overused words in business content.

So let me be specific.

Building across Zambia and Southern Africa for 12 years meant:
Currency devaluations that eroded margin overnight.
Power infrastructure failures that shut operations for days.
Import delays that froze pharmaceutical supply chains.
Regulatory changes that required full operational pivots.

In each case, the response was the same: find the system failure, fix the system, build a buffer.

Resilience is not a personality trait. It is an operational posture. It requires you to anticipate failure modes before they occur, build redundancy into key processes, and refuse to treat crisis as exceptional - because in emerging markets, crisis is the baseline.

The entrepreneur who treats difficulty as a deviation from normal will be permanently exhausted. The one who treats it as the operating environment will eventually outperform everyone who chose easier terrain.
