Sunita Rani is a well known Indian Athlete from Punjab. She won a Gold Medal at the 1500 m and a bronze Medal in the 5000m, at the 2002 Asian Games. Sunita was awarded with the honorable Arjuna Award in 1999 and Padma Shri, for her tremendous achievements.

Rani was hit with controversy about her performance at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea, after she tested positive for nandrolone, a banned substance that aids recovery, strength, and endurance. Both her medals were revoked. The Indian Olympic Association fought to prove that the doping tests had major procedural irregularities and that the results were not valid. Rani has categorically maintained that she had not taken any banned substances. She had also cleared the dope test in Delhi, on the eve of the Indian team's departure to Busan.

The Olympic Council of Asia later officially admitted that there had been discrepancies in her drug test. On 3 January 2003, the International Association of Athletics Federations officially cleared Rani of doping charges and reinstated her medals. The Amateur Athletic Federation of India held a 'Restoration of Medals' ceremony on 4 February 2003, to officially return Rani's medals.

International boxer Padma Shri Arjuna awardee Kaur Singh, from village Khanal Khurd, Sangrur, who maintained India's dominance in the Asian Games and won gold for the country. Kaur Singh is a former Indian heavyweight champion boxer from Punjab. He has represented India in the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. Singh won three gold medal for senior national boxing championship, Asian Boxing Championship and Asian Games. Singh was born in Jatt Sikh Family of village Khanal Khurd in Sangrur, Punjab's Malwa region. He was a small-time farmer before joining the Indian army in 1973 as havildar at the age of 23 where he participated in the India Pakistan War and was awarded Sena Meda for his bravery and received the Vishisht Sewa Medal in 1988
