Suspected Drug Link: Dholai Man Drowns in Rukni River While Fleeing Pursuers

A 35-year-old man, identified as Imam Hussain Barbhuiya, drowned in the Rukni River near Nagdirgram Part III and Narsingpur on Wednesday (October 7) after allegedly jumping into the river while fleeing a group of youths.

According to local sources, two youths were being chased when they jumped into the river. While one managed to swim across and escape, Imam Hussain went missing. An SDRF team later recovered his body after around 10 minutes of searching.

His family identified the body, which was subsequently sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The incident has raised suspicions of a possible drug-related dispute, although police have not confirmed any such connection. Sonai Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to the death.

Assam University, Silchar, gets representation in Assam’s reconstituted State Level Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC).

Professor Parthankar Choudhury of the Department of Ecology and Environmental Sciences, School of Environmental Science, Assam University, has been appointed as a member of the committee.

Professor Choudhury brings years of expertise in ecology and conservation and is a wealth of knowledge on the rich flora and fauna of the Barak Valley.

The SEAC, chaired by Jatindra Sarma, IFS (Retd), will assist the State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) in examining environmental matters and making recommendations on projects with potential environmental impacts.

The committee has been constituted by the Assam Government following a notification issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on 6 October 2026.

Under-construction Bridge Collapses in Hailakandi, Locals Blame Departmental Corruption

A bridge under construction over a canal connecting Baghergool in Mohanpur–Part II, under the Algapur-Katlicherra Assembly constituency, suddenly collapsed and sank into the canal before its completion.

The incident has raised concerns over the quality of construction, with locals alleging that contractor Raju Chowdhury used poor-quality materials and accusing officials of linked departments of corruption.
