I started alone cleaning up the river nearly 15-years ago.
I am still there swimming up the river trying to finish what I started, still alone!
A lot of people, thousands happily joined me on this decade and a half journey- some long, some short but all helped me many ways. Some taught me! Some made me think…. of human nature, human connectivity, their brilliance and also their stupidity!
Human stupidity is more powerful than the Mafia or the military. It has global catastrophic effects. It can be found anywhere, from the world's most powerful boardrooms to your local bar.
Carlo Cipolla was a professor of economic history at UC Berkeley. He was also, apparently, a man who had spent enough time observing his fellow humans to write a small, hilarious, and dead-serious book about the force that has hindered human welfare more than any other: stupidity.
The book is built around five laws. They are deceptively simple, and they will change the way you see the world.
The Five Laws
Law 1: Everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals among us.
We all do it. We assume that the people around us are rational, that they act in their own self-interest, that they think before they act. Cipolla argues that this assumption is dangerously wrong. The number of stupid people is always higher than we think, and it is constant across all groups, regardless of education, wealth, or social status.
Law 2: The probability that a certain person is stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.
Stupidity is not correlated with intelligence, education, income, or fame. You cannot predict who will act stupidly based on any of the things you think matter. The professor can be stupid. The CEO can be stupid. The person sitting next to you on the train can be stupid. And so can you.
Law 3: A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person while deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses themselves.
This is the heart of Cipolla's definition. A stupid person is not just someone who is unintelligent. A stupid person is someone whose actions cause harm to others while bringing no benefit, and often active harm, to themselves. They are the ones who break things for no reason, who create chaos for no gain, who drag others down while dragging themselves down too.
Law 4: Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals.
This is the most dangerous law. We consistently fail to account for stupidity when making decisions. We assume that others will act rationally. We assume that they will respond to incentives. We assume that they will not do the thing that hurts everyone, including themselves. We are wrong.
Law 5: A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.
There are four categories of people, Cipolla argues: the helpless (who cause harm to themselves while benefiting others), the intelligent (who benefit themselves and others), the bandit (who benefit themselves while harming others), and the stupid (who harm others while harming themselves). The bandit can be reasoned with. The bandit responds to incentives. But the stupid person is irrational. You cannot predict them. You cannot negotiate with them. They are the most dangerous because they act against their own interests, and yours.
3 Lessons That Stick With You:
1. Stupidity is not about intelligence.
You cannot spot a stupid person by looking at their credentials. Stupidity is a behavior, not a trait, and it is distributed randomly across all populations.
2. Stupid people harm others and themselves.
This is what makes them so dangerous. A bandit you can understand. A stupid person you cannot. They break things for no reason. They create chaos for no gain.
3. You underestimate the power of stupidity at your own peril.
We consistently fail to account for irrational behavior. We assume people will act logically. We assume they will respond to incentives. Cipolla argues that this assumption is the source of much of our suffering.
The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity is a small, sharp, and surprisingly profound book. Cipolla writes with wit and clarity, and his observations will make you laugh, and then make you think. It is a book that will change the way you see the world. You will never look at your coworkers, your politicians, or your relatives the same way again.
Read it if you've ever wondered how stupidity can be so powerful. Read it if you need a laugh and a dose of brutal honesty.
