We are excited to share insights from a landmark global conference hosted by the 𝐕𝐚𝐤𝐤𝐨𝐦 𝐌𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐯𝐢 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 (𝐕𝐌𝐅𝐓) at the University of Kerala, which brought together scholars from around the world to explore the life and legacy of Vakkom Moulavi and his contemporaries. Shashi Tharoor inaugurated the seminar.
• The conference, titled "𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝘿𝙞𝙖𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙪𝙚, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘿𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙨: 𝙑𝙖𝙠𝙠𝙤𝙢 𝙈𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙫𝙞 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙃𝙞𝙨 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨," highlighted the role of past reformers in shaping progressive policies and addressing contemporary social concerns through a secular approach.
• Vakkom Moulavi was a pioneering figure in Kerala’s intellectual and journalistic history, using the press as a tool for social critique and reform. His work extended beyond Kerala, engaging with transregional Islamic reform movements.
• The event underscored the importance of revisiting reformers like Vakkom Moulavi to better understand India’s democratic evolution. It also shed light on the often-overlooked reformist voices in mainstream historical narratives.
• Kerala's early reformers laid the groundwork for the state's progressive transformation, offering valuable lessons for contemporary social change.
VMFT is committed to creating knowledge systems that contribute to policy discussions by critically examining Kerala’s past reform movements. This conference marks a significant step in bringing Kerala’s intellectual traditions into global conversations, ensuring that Moulavi’s transformative ideas continue to inspire new generations.

International Seminar on Vakkom Moulavi Launched by Tharoor

The International Seminar titled 'Tradition, Dialogue, and Dissent in the Princely States: Vakkom Moulavi and His Contemporaries' was inaugurated by Hon. MP Dr. Shashi Tharoor on 8 Jan 2025 at the Symphony Hall, Mascot Hotel, Thiruvananthapuram
The event, organized by the Vakkom Moulavi Foundation Trust (VMFT) in association with the Dept of Islamic and West Asian Studies, University of Kerala, witnessed a vibrant start, with scholars, dignitaries, and students gathering to honour the pioneering social reformers of early 20th century Kerala.
Dr. Shashi Tharoor in his speech paid homage to Kerala's revolutionary reformers and highlighted the remarkable contributions of Moulavi to women's education, free speech, and the promotion of critical thinking.
The seminar commenced with an insightful address by Sri K. Jayakumar, former Chief Secretary of Kerala, who reflected on the legacy of Vakkom Moulavi and raised profound questions about the concepts of democracy, freedom of expression, and women's rights. Dr. Rakhshanda Jalil, renowned writer and historian, delivered the keynote address, shedding light on the multifaceted legacy of Hasrat Mohani, the poet-politician, and his significant contributions to the Indian Independence Movement.

The Vakkom Moulavi Foundation Trust (VMFT) Conducted an educational seminar titled "𝑮𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑨𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒓𝒐𝒐𝒎 - 𝑷𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒍𝒔: 𝑨 𝑽𝒊𝒆𝒘 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑺𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒆", on Saturday, November 9, 2024. This event, a collaborative effort by 𝐕𝐌𝐅𝐓, 𝐈𝐓 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞, and the 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚 (𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 and 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩), addressed the rapidly growing influence of generative AI on education.

𝐃𝐫. 𝐅𝐞𝐢 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐢𝐦, an distinguished educator from Singapore’s National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, explore how tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini are reshaping teaching and learning experiences worldwide.𝐃𝐫. 𝐋𝐢𝐦 also highlighted Singapore's forward-thinking approach to AI in education, particularly through the Ministry of Education’s EdTech Masterplan 2030, which serves as a guiding framework for AI integration across its education system. 𝐃𝐫. 𝐒𝐚𝐣𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐚 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫, 𝐆𝐮𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐊𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 acted as moderator 𝐌𝐬 𝐉𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐚 assisted the Q&A session.

Alongside the insights on AI, VMFT took the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of two of its educators, 𝐃𝐫. 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐤𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐚 𝐓, who recently represented India in a prominent educational exchange program in 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐡𝐚𝐢, 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚. Their participation marked India's first representation in this prestigious program, where they contributed significantly to discussions on innovative teaching practices. Both of them were felicitated in the meeting. They shared their memorable experience at the program.

By addressing the role of AI in education and recognizing its educators’ international contributions, VMFT reaffirmed its dedication to enriching India’s educational landscape.
