The Mysterious Origins and Journey of the Planchette: From Ancient China to Kerala's Literary Circles
In 1886, at spiritualist camps in Ohio, a device remarkably similar to the modern Ouija board was reportedly used with the goal of facilitating faster communication with spirits. One such spirit-communication instrument was the 'planchette', a tool believed to connect the living with the dead.
Interestingly, a comparable practice existed in ancient China, known as "Fu Chi." In this method, practitioners claimed that a special stick or piece of wood, guided by spiritual forces, would spontaneously draw Chinese characters in sand or ash. This practice eventually evolved into the planchette as we know it.
In 1890, Elijah Jefferson Bond attempted to patent a version of this spirit board, combining the planchette with alphabet markings into a game-like format. He was granted the patent in 1891. However, in 1901, his employee William Fuld renamed the invention as the Ouija board and took over its marketing and promotion, turning it into a cultural phenomenon.
The planchette later found its way to Kerala during the student days of A.P. Udayabhanu. According to his autobiography, his cousin introduced him to the use of the planchette. The sessions were held in the family house known as Alummoottil Padittathil, part of the historic Alummoottil tharavad (ancestral home).
Remarkably, they once claimed to have summoned the spirit of the late great poet Kumaranashan. Udayabhanu recounts questioning the spirit about a contradiction between two of Ashan's verses:
From Veena Poovu (The Fallen Flower):
"Let it be a dispassionate Vedic scholar—
Yet a coward who ran before the battle—
Standing tall with radiant grace,
Who are the ones that truly stand by you?"
Compared with another line:
"The soul, enchanted by the beauty of blossomed forests,
Left without a second thought. "
To this, Ashan—through the planchette—is said to have replied simply:
"Love is blind."
