Swift Composition? Ashan?!
Those familiar with Ashan’s method of writing would be amazed. His notebooks are filled with corrections and revisions! Most of his works took months or even years to complete. Even after completing a poem, he would read it aloud to several people and, if necessary, make further changes. Who, then, would believe that such a poet could also compose verses spontaneously? Yet Ashan was indeed capable of composing poetry in an instant. Following the instructions of Sree Narayana Guru, Ashan was living near the Sanskrit School at the Aluva Advaita Ashram, serving as its Dharmakartha. When Dewan Krishnan Nair, who had been a great benefactor of the school, was retiring from office, it was decided to give him a farewell reception and present him with a ceremonial address. Everyone also wished to include a congratulatory poem by Ashan on the occasion. However, because of his busy schedule, Ashan tried to avoid the request. The Valiya Gurukkal, who was in charge of the Sanskrit School, was Atmananda Swami. He came up with a plan—and it worked. In the morning, when the students went to the ashram to pay their respects to Sree Narayana Guru, Valiya Gurukkal instructed them to meet Ashan as well and request a poem from him. When the students approached Ashan and explained their request, he replied, “I am busy… I have no time… Let me see.” The students then went to pay their respects to Guru and, when they returned, they found Ashan waiting for them on the veranda with a sheet of paper in his hand. Saying that he had written it in haste, he read aloud to them a poem that he had composed within half an hour. Valiya Gurukkal and Satyavrata Swami were astonished when they saw the poem. It was an excellent piece of poetry, one that could stand alongside poems on which Ashan had spent considerable time. The poem was titled “Oru Yathramangalam.” At the function, the poem was sung by T. T. Kesava Sastry, who was then a student there and later became the son-in-law of Ayyankali. Ashan had a special affection for his students. When they made the request, he found time—even amidst his busy schedule—to compose a poem for them.
