Day of Russian Language and Alexander Pushkin’s Birthday observed in Trivandrum

The Day of the Russian Language and the birthday of Alexander Pushkin were observed in Trivandrum on 6 June 2026 through a series of literary and educational events. The programme included a seminar attended by writers and literary critics, an exhibition entitled “Pushkin and the Silver Age”, and a lecture on the relationship between Alexander Pushkin and Vladimir Dal. The occasion also marked the inauguration of celebrations commemorating the 225th birth anniversary of Vladimir Dal.

Writer and critic Pradeep Panangad inaugurated the literary evening and spoke about Pushkin’s contribution to world literature. Dr S. Neelakantan conducted a masterclass for thirty-five schoolchildren from twelve schools based on Pushkin’s literary characters. Dr Julia Matveeva of the Vladimir Dal State Museum of the History of Russian Literature delivered an online lecture. The event was jointly organised by the Russian Centre of the Russkiy Mir Foundation, the Vladimir Dal Museum and the Honorary Consulate of Russia in Trivandrum.

On 15 May 2026, the Honorary Consulate of Russia in Trivandrum and the Foundation Russkiy Mir Foundation jointly organised a literary seminar to mark the 135th birth anniversary of Mikhail Bulgakov. Writers and critics attended the seminar.
Writer C. Anoop in his inaugural adddress, said that Mikhail Bulgakov was loved by readers worldwide because he combined fearless political satire, deep philosophical questions, dark humour, and imaginative fantasy in a way that feels timeless and emotionally honest.
Prof. Govindan Nair, former Head of the Department of Russian at the University of Kerala, laureate of the Pushkin Medal and translator of The Master and Margarita, delivered the keynote address. Other speakers included Dr Anilkumar (who holds a PhD in Russian on satire in Bulgakov’s works) and Kavitha Nair.
