Baghdad as the center of discussions about water in the Middle East, with an active involvement of the Czech Embassy.

بغداد مركزاً للنقاشات حول المياه في الشرق الأوسط بمشاركة فعّالة من السفارة التشيكية.

Ambassador Jan Snaidauf participated on Saturday 24 May 2025 in the 5th Baghdad International Water Conference. The Ambassador was invited to speak in the opening plenary session, which was initiated by H.E. Prime Minister Muhammad al-Sudani and the Iraqi Ministers of Water Resources and of Environment.

Expressing his gratitude with the invitation to this important conference, the Ambassador underlined the vital importance of water issues not only in Iraq but globally, and noted the particular challenge for Iraq, which is not improving but rather worsening. He congratulated Iraq’s water authorities on the progress they made in tackling the water issue so far. While Czechia is not in the same situation, it shares some of the challenges related to water and much knowledge and expertise can be exchanged. Czechia and Iraq look back at half a century of cooperation in the water sector. Since the 1970s, Czechoslovak and Czech companies built dozens of pumping stations in Iraq as well as a number of dams and water treatment plants. There is much potential in building up on this great tradition.

The Ambassador reminded that Iraqi Prime Minister had made a successful visit to Prague in February this year, where a bilateral memorandum was signed covering also water affairs. As a follow-up, Czechia now offers the expertise of its institutions like the Czech Hydro-meteorological Institute or the Water Research Institute for cooperation such as visits, trainings, lectures, field trips and more. Specialized Czech companies offer solutions notably in purification and quality management of drinking water, hydrogeological surveys, irrigation systems, permeable surfaces and infiltration systems, watercourse revitalization, wastewater, medical waste treatment, or clearing of contaminated areas to prevent toxicity of waterways. This includes covering of basic needs where required, as well as providing high-tech solutions. Czechia has recent international experience, its companies are involved in large-scale water-sector projects in Ukraine or Syria.

Materials with Czechia’s offers to Iraq in the water sector were made available at the conference. The Ambassador called on the participants to express the most pressing current needs of Iraq so that there can be specific and effective cooperation. And he confirmed that the Embassy is at the disposal of those who are interested, and it can provide direct contacts.
