NATO Mission Iraq (NMI) is a non-combat advisory and capacity-building mission that assists Iraq in building more sustainable, transparent, inclusive and effective security institutions and armed forces, so that Iraqis themselves are able to stabilise their country, fight terrorism and prevent the return of Daesh. The mission was launched at the NATO Summit in Brussels in July 2018, following a request from the government of Iraq, and established in October 2018.

تهنئ بعثة الناتو في الهراق - العراق على تأهله إلى كأس العالم لكرة القدم القادمة. أحسنت يا منتخب العراق. وبذلك سيلعب العراق في نفس المجموعة مع النرويج والسنغال وفرنسا. وبخصوص مباراة فرنسا والعراق، فإن قائد بعثة الناتو بصفته فرنسيا، يدرك أنه مهما كانت النتائج، فإن البلد الذي يحمله في قلبه هو الذي سيفوز!

زار قائد بعثة الناتو ، اللواء كريستوف هينتزي، تمرين وثبة الأسد في 8 شباط 2026. تم التخطيط له من قبل فريق التخطيط الأساسي العراقي بدعم من مستشاري البعثة بموجب الهدف طويل المدى 18، وقد سلطت تمارين مركز قيادة على مستوى اللواء الضوء على قدرة الفريق المتنامية على تصميم وإجراء التدريب الحديث.
لأول مرة، دعم نظام مشبهات التدريب بمساعدة الحاسوب هذا التمرين، مما ساعد منتسبي اللواء على تعزيز مهارات اتخاذ القرارات والعمليات.
أشاد المستشاران أندريه وكريس من بعثة الناتو بالمهنية العالية التي أظهرها فريق التخطيط الاساسي. و العمل على متابعة التمرين في وقت لاحق من هذا العام سيعزز التعاون و التوافق.
The Commander of Mission Iraq (NMI), Major General Christoph Hintzy, visited Exercise LEAPING LION on 8 February 2026. Planned by the Iraqi Core Planning Team (ICPT) with support from advisors under Long-Term Objective 18, the Brigade-level Command Post Exercise highlighted the team’s growing ability to design and conduct modern training.
For the first time, a computer-assisted simulation system supported the exercise, helping the Brigade staff strengthen decision-making and operational skills.
NMI advisors Andre and Chris praised the professionalism of the ICPT. A follow-on exercise later this year will further enhance cooperation and interoperability.

COM NMI promoted explosive ordonnance awareness to become essential part of Iraqi Armed Forces basic training, while visiting the Bomb Disposal School in Besmayah, COM NMI witnessed good advisory work which has elevated the school to one of the best training institutes.

Women contribute to the Iraqi security institutions through a whole-of-government approach, diversifying perspectives in policy development, strengthening governance, and reinforcing accountability. Their work enhances institutional capacity and contributes to long-term stability on each level of the society.
By enhancing women’s participation in governance and decision-making, Iraqi decision makers strengthen the institutional foundations of Iraq’s security sector. Inclusive leadership and diverse perspectives are key to building resilient institutions capable of delivering security and stability for all.
On International Women’s Day, the NATO Mission Iraq recognizes the important role women across the Iraqi security sector play in strengthening peace and security in Iraq.

On International Women’s Day, NATO Mission Iraq (NMI) recognizes the vital contributions women make to advancing peace, security, and stability.
Across the mission, women serve in some of NMI’s most senior leadership and operational roles—from Generals to Captains, to Pilots, Intelligence Operators, Operations Officers, and Non-Commissioned Officers—alongside Senior National Representatives, Advisors, and Branch Heads. At every level of the mission, their leadership, expertise, and dedication strengthen NATO’s work every day. Their active participation is a central asset for the collective action in Women, Peace and Security domain, one of the NATO core values.

أظهر الضباط الطموحون والطيارون المستقبليون مهنية ملحوظة، وحماسة، وتفانيًا في تطويرهم، مما انعكس في اهتمامهم العميق بحلف الناتو والعمل الذي تقوم به بعثة الناتو في العراق.

Advancing Shared Understanding: NATO Mission Iraq Engages Future Iraqi Pilots
On 18 February 2026, the Head of the Advisory Branch of the Training Development Department delivered a NATO Awareness Introduction Brief at the Air Courses Wing at Al Suwarah Airbase.
The aspiring officers and future pilots showed notable professionalism, curiosity, and dedication to their development, reflected in their strong interest in NATO and the work carried out by NATO Mission Iraq (NMI).
The discussion encouraged open exchange, strengthened mutual understanding, and supported the trainees as they prepare for their future responsibilities. NMI looks forward to continued cooperation and further dialogue with our partners in the Iraqi Air Force.
