In a phone call today with KRI President Nechirvan Barzani, 🇩🇪 State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office, Dr. Géza von Geyr, strongly condemned recent attacks on different locations in the KRI, including on the President’s residence in Dohuk.

Preventing Iraq, including the KRI, from being drawn further into the conflict is essential. The State Secretary extended his condolences for those who lost their lives as well as his best recovery wishes to the many who have been injured.

Exchange focused on security developments, efforts to de-escalate the conflict in the region and the continuation of the longstanding 🇩🇪-🇮🇶 cooperation for stability. Germany remains a reliable partner in supporting security and economic development in Iraq, including the KRI.

About a month ago State Secretary von Geyr visited Baghdad and Erbil for talks on regional stability, shared security interests, and enduring partnership.

لە تەوەرێکی تری گفتوگۆکەدا، تیشک خرایە سەر پەرەسەندنی بارودۆخی ئەمنی، هەوڵەکان بۆ هێورکردنەوەی ئاڵۆزییەکانی ناوچەکە و بەردەوامبوونی هەماهەنگییە لەمێژینەکانی نێوان ئەڵمانیا و عێراق و هەرێمی کوردستان لەپێناو سەقامگیریدا. ئەڵمانیا وەک هاوبەشێکی جێی متمانە لە پشتگیریکردنی گەشەپێدانی ئەمنی و ئابووری لە عێراق و هەرێمی کوردستان دەمێنێتەوە.
نزیکەی مانگێک لەمەوبەر، سکرتێری دەوڵەت فۆن گەیر بە مەبەستی گفتوگۆکردن لەسەر سەقامگیری ناوچەکە، بەرژەوەندییە ئەمنییە هاوبەشەکان و هاوبەشییەکی بەردەوام سەردانی بەغدا و هەولێری کردبوو .

On International Women's Day we recognize Yanar Mohammed for her tireless fight for women’s rights in Iraq. A recipient of the German-French Prize for Human Rights and the Rule of Law, her work stands as a powerful reminder of the importance of courage and equality.

In Memoriam: Yanar Mohammed

The European Union Delegation and EU Member States in Iraq, the Embassies of Australia, Canada, United Kingdom and Switzerland express their deep sorrow about the killing of Ms. Yanar Mohammed, President of the Women's Freedom Organization in Iraq (OWFI) and woman human rights defender, on 2 March 2026 in Baghdad. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and colleagues, and reaffirm our commitment to the values of equality, justice, and inclusion for which she stood.

Yanar Mohammed dedicated her life to defending women's rights and supporting survivors of violence. With her organisation OWFI she provided vital support to women escaping abuse and exploitation. Her killing is a profound loss to the women's movement in Iraq, and a heavy hit to civil society and peaceful civic engagement.

On International Women’s Day, this is a painful reminder of how much still needs to be done to protect women from violence and advance women’s rights.

We strongly condemn this attack. We commend the Iraqi government for initiating an immediate and thorough investigation into this matter and emphasise the importance of accountability for the perpetrators.
