What if you could start a new society on a tiny island in the middle of the ocean? What would you keep, what would you discard, what new ways of living might emerge? The Travelling Embassy of Rockall is collecting ideas and innovations on possible future scenarios. Join our Reykjavík exposition and contribute to developing new ways of being, acting and thinking in the world.

Today's been a great day at Breiðholt Festival - biking through an adventurous island and making flags for a new society - surrounded by ethnic food, music and good people! Takk everyone!

Holger Czukay - Cool in the pool 31/03/2017

Imagine a place where you wouldn't only casually exchange stories but dead skin cells too. Where there's no alcohol but steaming hot water to soften your nerves. Where it's socially acceptable to hang out from 7 (!) in the morning to escape your responsibilities.

This isn't just some vague fantasy; this is a daily reality for all of those who get to enjoy Icelandic pool culture. Next week a team of our ambassadors is travelling to Rotterdam to spread the gospel. We're bringing hot tubs, chit chat and blissful naïvety to the beautiful Motel Mozaique Festival 2017. Stay tuned on this page to see our programme and some pool selfies of our well-built beach boy Árni: he's spent all winter working out just to shine brightly next week.

Lots of love and enjoy your weekend!

What if you're casually hanging out at Ingólfstorg in Reykjavík, as you do on any other Tuesday morning, and you suddenly feel a burning desire to consume some sweets? Naturally you swing your leg over your bike and off you go, shooting across town towards Skeifan's Hagkaup. Now this might sound like a fantasy scene, but we hope to make it a (daily) reality for Icelanders.

Obviously you can substitute the place names or motivations to move, but our psychological research has pointed out that nothing quite gets the average Icelander on the road like the promise of handful of lakkrís or a lukewarm pylsur/pylsa. Cycling to Skeifan and back will burn enough calories for both of them!

Today at Rockall á HönnunarMars // Rockall on DesignMarch we're kicking off our new campaign to change the way this country moves about. Soon we'll dig into the benefits of cycling culture that go beyond burning calories. There's a lot to be gained in a sense of community and connection to place, not to mention the money factor. But for now, we'll stick to sweets......

PS: Google Maps does not have a cycling option in Iceland.
PPS: We do not receive sponsoring from Hagkaup, unfortunately.

Thumbs Up for Rock and Roll! 22/03/2017

As travelling ambassadors we've been places and seen things, and not just nasty hostel kitchens and airport lounges; we've seen countries both flourish and fumble. Based on our experiences we've decided to oversee a highly necessary cultural exchange between Iceland and the Netherlands. Rotterdam and Reykjavík will be the two cities connected by their strengths and weaknesses, both teaching the other some invaluable knowledge.

This weekend we'll kick off our next stage at Rockall á HönnunarMars // Rockall on DesignMarch. We're going to try to put last summer's lessons into practice, starting with one thing and one place at a time: bicycle culture in Iceland. Hopefully, by the end of the year, the inner bike kid in Reykjavík will have the same moment of victory as the boy in the video deservedly celebrates.

See you this weekend!
