Is the Blue Grotto open in winter? Yes, but only on calm days with good weather, and in winter there are fewer of those. Expect it to be closed more often than in summer.
How to know if it's open
Nobody can confirm it the day before. Every morning around 9 a.m. the boatmen go to the mouth of the cave and decide whether it's safe to go in. North winds almost always close it.
In winter the info point at the port is closed. When you land at Marina Grande, ask at the Laser Capri and Motoscafisti booths, the companies that run the island boat tours. If their booths are closed, the sea is too rough for boats, and the Grotto is closed too.
When to go
Official winter hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., from October 16 to March 31. In practice the boatmen often stop earlier, so go in the morning. The upside: none of the summer lines, which can run past an hour.
What it costs
€19 per person, paid at the entrance by card or in cash: €13 for the rowboat and €6 for the site ticket. It isn't sold online. You also need a boat to get there, about €25 from Marina Grande. On the first Sunday of the month the site ticket is free, so you pay only the €13 rowboat.
At the entrance you move to a small rowboat for up to four people and lie back to pass under the opening, about 3 feet (1 meter) high.
