🌊 The Mediterranean Sea is warming at a rapid pace. Marine heatwaves are reshaping underwater habitats, but did you know that not all "problematic" species are alien?
On one side, native species like the bearded fireworm (𝐻𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑜𝑑𝑖𝑐𝑒 𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑢𝑛𝑐𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑎) are expanding their range and behaving like invasive species, disrupting rocky bottom ecosystems. On the other, new "Lessepsian migrants" continue to arrive from the Red Sea via the Suez Canal—including tropical species like the lionfish, silver-cheeked toadfish, and rabbitfishes.
🐡⚠️ Note: Some of these new arrivals pose serious health risks.
🤿 You can help track these changes! Citizen science plays a crucial role: if you spot unusual marine life while diving, snorkelling, or walking along the coast, report it to help researchers detect new arrivals early.
