The uprising by the Spanish people following Maricarmen’s violent eviction is an opportunity for all the peoples of Europe to wake up.
The issue of housing is not a secondary one; it lies at the heart of our lives, not only because housing is an essential need, a fundamental right, and because public authorities are supposed to guarantee this right for everyone – even if they fail to do so – but also, and above all, because rent has become the number one form of capitalist exploitation.
When Proudhon wrote ‘property is theft’, he may not have imagined the phenomenon of the financialisation of housing, nor that capitalists would profit from empty rather than occupied homes, or even that tourists would replace residents in city centres (and on islands), but his phrase strikes at the heart of the struggle waged by our Spanish comrades.
Rent is theft. Gentrification, touristification, property market bubbles, rent rises that signify nothing other than a new era of capitalist exploitation, police violence linked to evictions, and the criminalisation of people who squat or support squats are just some of the ways in which this theft is made possible. We must rise up against this theft, here and now, throughout Europe and across the world.
The EAC stands in solidarity with the Spanish people, who are demanding a 50% reduction in all rents, the expropriation of large property owners, and open-ended tenancies!
Let’s organise solidarity actions across our cities over the coming days to show our solidarity with our Spanish comrades!
