GECO 2.2 GECO 2.2 Funded by the Interreg Italy-Croatia aims to create a regional carbon market in agriculture

The GECO2.2 project funded by INTERREG Italy-Croatia Programme, builds on the results of the previous GECO2 initiative, which established the first experimental voluntary market for carbon credits from agriculture. The successful outcomes and challenges identified in the original project led the partners to design GECO2.2 to pursue and consolidate the work done, also in the light of the increasing environmental emergencies and the new legislative scenario in Europe. The project promotes agricultural practices that increase carbon stocks in soil and biomass, make farms more resilient to floods and droughts, thereby reducing disaster risks, and enhance ecosystem services and biodiversity. Project outcomes include raising public awareness of climate change and local agricultural solutions, enabling businesses to offset their carbon footprint with regional credits, creating self-sustaining local solutions without relying on public funding, and developing a scalable and replicable market model for regional carbon markets across Europe.

๐ŸŒฑ The journey of carbon farming across the Adriatic
A shared journey between Italy and Croatia is helping shape the future of carbon farming.
The new GECO 2.2 publication presents the projectโ€™s activities, innovative tools and key resultsโ€”from pilot actions and carbon measurement to digital solutions and certification.
Through the voices and experiences of farmers, researchers, experts and project partners, it shows how science, innovation and cross-border cooperation can protect soils, support climate action and create new opportunities for rural communities.

๐ŸŒณ What can centuries-old olive groves teach us about carbon farming?
In the Venafro Plain, Italy, Raffaele Cotugno manages an olive grove featuring local varieties such as Aurina, Olivastro and Rosciola, with trees over 200 years old.
Permanent grass cover and organic fertilisation help protect biodiversity, enrich the soil and increase its capacity to store carbon.

๐Ÿซ’ Some of these olive trees have witnessed up to two centuries of history.
In Blatina, near Janjina on Croatiaโ€™s Peljeลกac Peninsula, Niko Jasprica cares for a family olive grove with 180 trees, some estimated to be between 150 and 200 years old.
By preserving natural grass cover and avoiding soil tillage, he protects the rocky terrain and maintains the balance of its ecosystem.
