Scotland + Venice Open Call for 2028

“In Shame Parade, we have been investigating what we call ‘auditory zones of shame’, questioning how spaces are controlled through sound and costume, drawing on Scottish, Filipino and trans perspectives. With these spatial dynamics central to our practice, we are excited to see how the work continues to evolve as it encounters new spaces and audiences in galleries across Scotland, the wider UK and Norway.

Returning to Mount Stuart is particularly significant. We are immensely grateful for their generosity and belief in our work every step of the way, and for encouraging us to think with curiosity and inquietude. Our sculptural and video works will coexist within the spaces at Mount Stuart where we filmed, from the gleaming ceilings to the darkness beneath its trapdoors.

Shame Parade will tour to Mount Stuart in April 2027, with a satellite exhibition with Travelling Gallery and Kunsthall Trondheim in October 2027 before embarking on a UK tour supported by Art Fund, venues include Newcastle Contemporary Arts and Inverness Museum and Art Gallery.

We are delighted to announce that Shame Parade will return to Scotland, as part of a UK tour supported by Art Fund, opening the 26th year of visual arts programming at Mount Stuart on 17 April 2027.

Alongside the homecoming exhibition, a satellite exhibition of expanded material from Shame Parade will travel across Scotland with the Travelling Gallery March to June 2027 and in summer 2027 the Travelling Gallery will host an exhibition of responses to Venice from participants of the Scotland + Venice Professional Development Programme.

Following its domestic debut on the Isle of Bute, artworks from Shame Parade will travel to Kunsthall Trondheim in October 2027, where they will be shown with a suite of new works in a distinct presentation, before returning for the UK tour supported by Art Fund. Venues will include Newcastle Contemporary Arts and Inverness Museum and Art Gallery.

Submit to Sound is a new multi-channel moving image work by Bugarin + Castle. Through shifting time periods, places and spaces, including Scottish historic locations, preparations unfold for a shaming parade, and the emergence of a new voice.

Sadie, a trans woman undergoes voice feminisation therapy, as she reflects on and undertakes other forms of training; from roleplay, to stunt doubling, to recounting the words of C14th trans womand and s*x worker Eleanor Rykener.  From below a trapdoor, on ladders or gripping perilous ropes, Mr. Mimic appears, echoing Sadie’s clothing and sounds with gestures that oscillate between mockery and empathy.

Two singers, from the Manila-based band Kalye Teresa, send their voices through windows and arrow slits, carrying stories of questioned desire, defiance and shaming. Amid interruptions, their music reverberates confidently from Manila karaoke screens in the homes of q***r Filipinos. Across these vignettes, sound, shame and voice become contested tools of control and transformation.

Submit to Sound was curated by Mount Stuart and produced by Forma for Bugarin + Castle’s presentation for Scotland + Venice.

“We are a collective and also a couple. We work and fight with each other, but in a drag way: we exaggerate and ask big questions. We want to disrupt the narrative and messify it.”

“Inherently, shame must be in the pride parade: if we are talking about pride, then what is the shame that we are overcoming and what is the history of that? Senior Exhibition Associate Jj Fadaka is taking us on a tour of Shame Parade, delving into the themes explored across the works across this multi-layered exhibition. Starting here with Bugarin + Castle’s ‘At Certayne Tymes’, a suspended sculptural work comprising of multiple materials including resin, steel and capiz shell that is reminiscent of a traditional public clock.

“We have two perspectives of clocking and clocks; so the public clock and also how cishet people feel authority to ‘clock’ trans women.

Does that come from cishet people understanding q***r terms and then using it against q***r people? What does that tell us about representation and maybe times where we want to keep some things to ourselves?

Just like the public clock, cishet normativity looms over q***r lives and it forms a mainstream narrative of how people in this area live.” - Jj Fadaka

Here, Curator Dr Morven Gregor discusses Charivari, a practice of public shaming and folk justice in medieval Europe from which Shame Parade grew.

Charivari focussed on individuals who defied stereotypical gender roles, neighbours gathered to mock their targets through satirical cross-dressing and discordant noise.

‘Set Upon’ is a vibrant digital print on metal that visually unites Bugarin + Castle’s research themes, objects and locations.

Architecturally modeled, it includes the Horoscope ceiling at Mount Stuart and plans of storage facilities in Edinburgh and Manila, housing archives containing sound restriction laws.

The vertiginous perspectives echo the use of shifting sightlines in the moving image work Submit to Sound, specifically connecting to falls and climbs through the trapdoor. By introducing ideas of entrapment, the artists highlight a discriminatory trope trans people have regularly encountered.

On the stainless steel frame lie 9 fake nails adorned with shame parade participants inspired by 18th Century William Hogarth prints.

We were delighted to welcome the Art Fund and Association for Art History to Shame Parade in September, for a tour and conversation about the work with artists Buagrin + Castle over some delicious Rapscallion Soda (RAPSCALLION SODA).

‘Soundtrack for a clock and a jeepney’ is the first work audiences encounter at Shame Parade, a repeated gulping sound in the corridor as you walk through the corridor to enter the exhibition space.

“There’s a gulping sound repeated with this sense of anticipation as you walk through the corridor, which becomes a throat, which becomes a passageway.” - Angel Cohn Castle, Bugarin + Castle.

On entering the space, viewers first witness At Certayne Tymes, which includes a stylised image of a human throat focusing on the depiction of an Adam’s Apple, gesturing toward the rhythms and registers of gendered voice.
