The doctoral school of the Urbanism curriculum of Iuav University of Venice , in continuity with the Bernardo Secchi Working seminars (JBS) initiative organised by HRC Habitat Research Center EPFL (Lausanne)/Fondation Braillard (Geneva), is pleased to present the BERNARDO SECCHI: THEMES AND ARCHIVE(S) PhD Seminar.

This research opportunity builds upon the theoretical framework of the previous occasions that, through seminars and “Quaderni della ricerca” (Officina edizioni, 2001-2017), constitute the common denominators on which the Doctoral School in Urbanism in Venice traces a perimeter of reflections.

The seminar aims to share, challenge, and explore the hypothesis that the “progetto di suolo” (design of the ground) and the “La città dei ricchi e la città dei poveri" (The city of the rich and the city of the poor) are two themes of project and research that ran through Bernardo Secchi’s critical and operative thought.
Although these themes are chronologically distant in the research path of Bernardo Secchi, they are transversal throughout his research and are common denominators for each other. Moreover, they are reference figures in the construction of the research premises that repeatedly intersect the themes and places in our field of investigation within the framework of the PhD in Urbanism.

The seminar will be divided into two days in Venice, one for reflection and exchange on the themes and one for an in-depth look at the role and forms of the archive.

Territory as a subject of rights recognises its capacity to enter into dialogue with life in its various expressions. These expressions should be analysed in depth to understand their intrinsic patterns and ultimately lead to a responsible project. The case of water, in its agential role, allows us to delineate the territory through its experiences, intertwined with relevant urban
processes and transformations, which are crucial for a comprehensive ecological understanding that connects life.
