Make a Splash Safely: Essential Tips for Drowning Prevention Week!

As Drowning Prevention Week gets underway, our dedicated Les Quennevais Sports Centre Wet Side team is here to share their water safety tips for a fun and safe time at the Coronation Park Splashpad.

Aly, our amazing Aquatics Program Co-Ordinator, emphasises these key points for Splashpad safety:

👀Constant Supervision is Key: "Please keep a close eye on your children at all times. Drowning can happen quickly and silently, even in shallow water."

🐟Use Floatation Devices (When Appropriate): "Don't forget armbands or other approved floatation devices for younger or less confident swimmers. These are an extra layer of safety, but remember they are not a substitute for active supervision."

💧Shallow Water Can Be Dangerous: "It's crucial to remember that it is possible to drown in very shallow water. Even a few inches can be a risk, especially for young children."

☀️Sun Safety Matters Too! "While focusing on water safety, let's not forget sun protection! Wear something cool and comfortable, and don’t forget sunscreen and a hat to protect against harmful UV rays."

Water safety starts with knowledge. Whenever you are around water:

❗Stop and think – take time to assess your surroundings. Look for the dangers and always research local signs and advice.

👥Stay together – stick with friends or family when around water. Swim at a lifeguarded venue.

Check the Water Safety Code from Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK this and share it with others to keep your community safe:

We asked our wonderful Les Quennevais Wet Side team for their top tips for Drowning Prevention week.

Aly, Aquatics Program Co-Ordinator said: “If you are swimming in the sea, always check the tides before getting in the water. Check the weather, take a floatation buoy that is orange or pink and bright coloured swim cap so you can be seen. Always swim with a buddy and tell someone when you are going in and when you have left the water.”
