Deaf rights are human rights!

On this International Day of Sign Languages, we highlight what Deaf rights mean to members of the Deaf community in Jamaica. 

It's important to remember that not all Deaf and hard of hearing persons use Jamaican Sign Language. Some use Country Sign and others may choose a mix of communication methods that best suit their needs. 

For the many Deaf and hard of hearing persons who use Jamaican Sign Language and Country Sign, access to information and services in sign language is at the heart of ensuring that they can access public services intended for all Jamaicans.

Respecting this diversity in language makes all the difference!

Happy International Week of Deaf People! 

Getting Jamaican Sign Language (JSL) recognised as the native language of Deaf persons in Jamaica is important to support equitable access to services. Respecting the diverse communication needs of the Deaf community is also a critical part of ensuring that Deaf persons can actively contribute to nation-building.

This team helps to bring JSL to the public, supports our school staff with JSL and Deaf education training and resources, and executes annual literacy and numeracy assessments throughout our schools.
