Exploring Hungaricums Together (Part 1)

Let’s start by answering the question of what Hungaricums are. By definition, Hungaricums are a collection of uniquely Hungarian products, traditions, cultural values, and heritage items that represent the country's identity and diversity. These elements – of which there are more than 100 – include various kinds of food, inventions, folk traditions and even landscapes that are officially recognised for their exceptional quality and distinct Hungarian character.

Our first pick in this new series exploring Hungaricums is an item connected to agriculture and the food industry, more specifically ground paprika from Kalocsa (Kalocsai fűszerpaprika-őrlemény), a dark red, rich-flavoured spice produced in the Kalocsa region since 1861, when the first paprika mill was built in the town. Initially, paprika mills produced ground paprika using millstones, but more advanced mills were later built to increase production, powered by electric and diesel engines.

Nowadays, the spice is protected by the strongest EU geographical indication scheme (PDO), a distinction meaning that every production step takes place in the Kalocsa region using traditional methods. An important item of Hungaricums, this spice is widely appreciated by Hungarians not just for its history, but also as an everyday ingredient in classic dishes such as goulash, stew and chicken paprikash.

The occasion is observed across the country with special cultural and literary events, public poetry readings, contemporary poetry competitions and a variety of school programmes.

In this spirit, we would love to hear from you - who is your favourite Hungarian poet, and which of their poems is closest to your heart? Feel free to share it in the comments section and let’s celebrate together!

The Embassy of Hungary in Amman had the pleasure of hosting a reception for Hungary’s National Day, commemorating the 1848–49 Revolution and War of Independence. We sincerely thank our fellow citizens and our friends from the Hungarian Universities and Institutes Jordanian Graduates' Club for joining us.

The evening, featuring a musical performance by the Club’s choir along with Hungarian and local treats, offered a meaningful moment to reflect on the importance of the Revolution and to strengthen our community ties. 🇭🇺🇯🇴

🇭🇺 15 March marks one of Hungary’s most significant national holidays, commemorating the outbreak of the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence of 1848. On this day, a group of young intellectuals and reformers gathered in Pest to demand political and social reforms within the Habsburg Monarchy. The revolutionaries published the list of the Twelve Points, calling for peace, liberty and concord, including the freedom of the press, an independent Hungarian government, equality before the law, and the establishment of a national army and a national bank.

Though largely peaceful, the events of 15 March in Pest triggered a broader wave of political transformation that culminated in a war of independence against Habsburg rule. While the struggle was ultimately suppressed, it profoundly shaped Hungarian national identity and unity, becoming a lasting symbol of the Hungarian people’s quest for freedom. As Sándor Petőfi, the national poet of Hungary and one of the leading figures of the Youth of March (Márciusi Ifjak), urged in his patriotic poem National Song (’Nemzeti Dal’), Hungarians heard the call of the nation and rose to take action for the freedom of the homeland.

On this occasion each year, Hungarians proudly wear the cockade (’kokárda’), a circular ribbon with the red, white and green colours of the national flag. This ribbon – historically used during the revolution as well – symbolizes unity, patriotism and gratitude towards the heroes of the past.
