The events in Kasese, Fort Portal, and Bundibugyo are tragic yes but they also expose something deeper: the systemic failure of intelligence, accountability, and community trust in our so-called security apparatus. You cannot keep calling your citizens “terrorists” every time they pick up pangas to express anger, yet you’ve refused to listen to their grievances for years.

How convenient that every unexplained killing in the west is immediately linked to “ADF remnants”!
How convenient that we never hear about judicial inquiries only bullets and “body counts.”

We’ve been here before: Kasese 2016, when hundreds were massacred at the Rwenzururu palace, with not a single conviction for the state’s excesses. Now, nine years later, the same soil is soaked again with blood, and the same questions remain unanswered:

Who are these so-called “attackers”?

What drove them to this?

Why does the state always respond with lethal force first, investigations later or never?

The problem is not just security. It’s the criminalisation of dissent and the culture of impunity that has turned Uganda into a police state. Until we confront that reality, Kasese will remain a recurring headline in our national tragedy a wound that never heals.
