Typhoon Jangmi (Typhoon No 6) is forecast to bring heavy rain and strong winds to parts of Japan this week.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has advised that heavy rain may affect areas along Japan’s Pacific coast from Kyushu to Kanto, including Tokyo, through Wednesday. Some areas may receive 200-300 mm of rain, with risks of landslides, flooding, storm surges and high waves.

Airlines have already cancelled some flights to and from Okinawa. Travellers should check directly with airlines and transport providers, monitor local advice, and allow extra time for travel.

New Zealanders in Japan should follow the advice of local authorities, including any evacuation orders, and monitor the Japan Meteorological Agency, NHK World-Japan and local media. New Zealanders may also wish to download the NHK World-Japan app for emergency alerts and information in English.

ニュージーランド大使館のギャレス・ピジョン公使と宮﨑智世エグゼクティブオフィサーは北海道小樽市を訪問し、迫俊哉市長、鈴木喜明議長、土屋周三小樽ニュージーランド協会副会長らに温かくお迎えいただきました。😄同市は1980年にニュージーランドのダニーデン市と姉妹都市提携を結び、46年を経て活発な交流が継続されています。昨年には市長が親善使節団を率いて現地を訪問され、つい先日には姉妹都市締結50周年を祝うための官民からなる準備委員会が立ち上げられたとのことです。👍4年後のお祝いが楽しみですね！

New Zealand Embassy Deputy Head of Mission Gareth Pigeon and Executive Officer Tomo Miyazaki visited Otaru City in Hokkaido, where they were warmly welcomed by Mayor Toshiya Hazama, Council Chairman Yoshiaki Suzuki, and Otaru New Zealand Association Vice-President Shuzo Tsuchiya.🤗 The city established a sister city relationship with Dunedin, New Zealand in 1980, and active exchanges have continued so far for 46 years. Last year, the Mayor led a goodwill delegation on a visit to Dunedin. ✨Now a preparatory committee comprising representatives from both the public and private sectors has been established to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the sister city relationship. Wonderful! 👬 👫 👭

ニュージーランド国家緊急事態管理庁のデイブ・ゴーン長官は、日本の防災対策や早期警報システム🚨、防災教育について学び、さらに防災分野での🇳🇿🇯🇵間の協力を強化するため、先月日本を訪問しました。

滞在中は、東京での会合や技術説明会に加え、仙台📍を訪問し、2011年の東日本大震災と津波の被害を記憶にとどめる重要な場所である震災遺構仙台市立荒浜小学校も訪れることができました。お世話になった内閣府をはじめとする皆様に、この場を借りて御礼申し上げます。

2011年の東日本大震災のわずか数週間前、ニュージーランドではクライストチャーチ地震が発生しました。両震災の影響が続く中、両国は支援と連帯の精神のもと、互いに支えあいました。

その精神は今日も受け継がれており、ニュージーランドと日本は経験を共有し、より安全で強靭な地域社会の構築に向けて協力しています🤝

New Zealand National Emergency Management Agency Chief Executive Dave Gawn recently visited Japan for a programme focused on disaster preparedness, early warning systems 🚨, disaster prevention education, and strengthening cooperation between our two countries 🇳🇿🇯🇵

The visit included meetings and technical briefings in Tokyo, followed by engagements in Sendai 📍, including at Arahama Elementary School Ruins, an important site for remembering the impact of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami.

Just weeks before the Great East Japan Earthquake, New Zealand experienced the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. In the aftermath of both disasters, our countries stood side by side in support and solidarity.

That same spirit continues today, as New Zealand and Japan share experience and work together to help build safer, more resilient communities 🤝 We extend our sincere thanks to the Cabinet Office, local authorities, and all those who supported the visit.

Overseas voting will commence on Wednesday 21 October and will close no later than 4:00 pm (local time) on Friday 6 November at overseas voting places. All voting will close 7:00 pm (New Zealand time) on election day, Saturday 7 November.

The New Zealand Embassy in Tokyo will be closed from 4 to 6 May in observance of Japan’s national holidays.

🇳🇿🤝🇯🇵 今年、オークランド市と福岡市は姉妹都市提携を結んでから40周年を迎えます。🤩
この節目を記念して、ギャレス・ピジョン公使一行は福岡を訪問し、様々なパートナーやニュージーランドの古くからの友人たちと会談しました。
一行は、九州におけるニュージーランド名誉領事として10年の任期を迎えられた倉富純男・西日本鉄道取締役会長および福岡商工会議所の谷川浩道会頭と面会できたことを大変喜ばしく思います。🧐
また、オークランドと福岡間のスタートアップおよびイノベーションの連携強化を支援している「福岡グロース・ネクスト（FGN）」や、地域の各家庭へニュージーランド産食品を届ける重要なパートナーであるコープ九州とも面会しました。

🇳🇿🤝🇯🇵 This year marks the 40th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Auckland and Fukuoka. 🤩
As part of marking this milestone, Deputy Head of Mission Gareth Pidgeon led an Embassy delegation to Fukuoka to meet with a range of partners and long-standing friends of New Zealand in the area.
The delegation was pleased to meet with Sumio Kuratomi, who is marking 10 years of service as New Zealand’s Honorary Consul in Kyushu and who also serves as Chair of the Board of Nishi-Nippon Railroad, and with Chair Hiromichi Tanikawa of the Fukuoka Chamber of Commerce and Industry. 🧐
The team also met with Fukuoka Growth Next, which is helping strengthen startup and innovation links between Auckland and Fukuoka, and with Co-op Kyushu, a valued partner helping bring New Zealand food products to households across the region.
These engagements reflect the breadth of the relationship between New Zealand and Kyushu, spanning business, food and agriculture, innovation, and education. 🤗 We look forward to celebrating our connections further during this anniversary year.

👩‍🏫👨‍🎓 エデュケーション・ニュージーランドは、ニュージーランド大使館にて、Kiwi EdLinkとの共同によるセミナーおよびネットワーキングイベントを開催いたしました。
本イベントは、参加教育機関によるプレゼンテーションとネットワーキングの二部構成で実施され、交流と情報交換の貴重な機会となりました。
当日は、日本各地から教育エージェントや教育業界関係者を中心に30名以上の皆様にご参加いただきました。
本イベントを通じて、ジュニア向け英語プログラム、ボーディングスクール、ホームステイ、IBプログラムなど、ニュージーランド教育の多様な魅力をご紹介することができました。
また、ニュージーランドの豊かな自然環境と、留学生に対する手厚いサポート体制に対しても、多くの関心が寄せられました。

👩‍🏫👨‍🎓 Education New Zealand was delighted to host a joint seminar and networking session with Kiwi EdLink at the New Zealand Embassy in Tokyo.
The event was delivered in two parts - presentations from participating schools, followed by a networking session - providing valuable opportunities for engagement and exchange.

More than 30 participants, primarily education agents and international education professionals from across Japan, joined us.
The event provided an excellent platform to showcase the strengths of New Zealand education, including junior English programmes, boarding options, homestay experiences, and IB pathways.
Participants showed strong interest in New Zealand’s outstanding natural environment and its supportive learning environment for international students.
