Ziwa Sub-County Hospital has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by successfully performing its first Caesarean section, ushering in a new era of maternal healthcare for residents of Uasin Gishu County.

The surgery, conducted by a skilled team of healthcare professionals, represents a major leap forward in the county's strategy to enhance medical services at the sub-county level and ease the burden on referral hospitals.

Health officials hailed the achievement as a transformative development for maternal and child health in the region. They emphasized that expectant mothers in Ziwa and surrounding areas will no longer need to endure long and often risky journeys to Eldoret or other referral centers to access emergency obstetric care.

The medical team credited the County Government of Uasin Gishu, led by Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii, for its sustained investment in health infrastructure, modern equipment, and staffing. These efforts have enabled Ziwa Sub-County Hospital to progressively broaden its scope of specialized medical services.

Residents and community leaders celebrated the news, describing it as a crucial intervention that will eliminate dangerous delays in accessing emergency maternal care and play a vital role in reducing maternal and infant deaths.

The successful operation follows a recent assessment by Health Services County Executive Janet Kurgat and Clinical Services Chief Officer Ambrose Tarus, who evaluated the hospital's theatre readiness and expressed full confidence in its surgical capabilities.

The County Government of Uasin Gishu on Monday launched Phase Two of the Stima Mashinani programme in Ainabkoi Sub-County under Nguzo Number 7, which focuses on infrastructure and energy development.

The launch was led by Governor Dr Jonathan Bii and flanked by County Executives Anthony Sitienei ( Energy, Environment and Natural Resources), Robert Kemei (Youth and Sports) and Chief Officer Mr Mark Some (Climate Change and Energy), as well as Director of Energy Dr Silas Leting.

The delegation visited several project sites, including Grey Stone Village in Tarakwa Ward, Kewet in Ainabkoi/Olare Ward, as well as Koitebes Village and Emgwen Village in Cheptiret/Kipchamo Ward, where residents are expected to benefit from the rural electrification programme.

The projects form part of 22 Stima Mashinani projects being implemented across the county and are expected to benefit more than 1200 residents through improved access to electricity.

Speaking during the launch, Governor Bii said the programme is aimed at transforming the livelihoods of residents through increased electricity connectivity in rural areas.

โ€œWe are committed to ensuring that every village gets connected to electricity because power connectivity opens opportunities for businesses, education, security, and better living standards for our people,โ€ said Governor Bii.

Mr Sitienei noted that the county is focused on accelerating the implementation of the projects to ensure residents benefit within the expected timelines.

โ€œThese projects are part of the county governmentโ€™s commitment under Nguzo Number 7 to expand energy access and ensure no community is left behind in development,โ€ said Sitienei.

The program reaffirms that the Stima Mashinani initiative remains a key pillar in improving infrastructure and promoting equitable development across all wards in Uasin Gishu County.

The County Government of Uasin Gishu has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cancer prevention and early detection after Health Services County Executive Janet Kurgat on Monday hosted representatives from the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) Imara Breast Cancer (BC) Project during a courtesy call.

The delegation, led by Dr Loice Sitienei, briefed the County leadership on the programmeโ€™s long-term vision, noting that the Imara initiative builds on years of experience in breast cancer care under AMPATH and seeks to transform outcomes by closing gaps in early detection, diagnosis, and treatment.

Kurgat emphasized that the project aligns closely with the countyโ€™s preventive health agenda, noting that it will intensify community sensitization on breast cancer and encourage more women to go for regular screening.

She further highlighted that the initiative will strengthen the health system through integration of advanced diagnostic tools such as point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), aimed at improving timely and accurate diagnosis at the facility level across Uasin Gishu County.

Chief Officers Ambrose Tarus (Clinical Services) and Dr Paul Wangwe (Promotive and Preventive Health) underscored the importance of collaboration in ensuring demand for breast cancer services generated at the community level is adequately met, marking a significant step toward improving early detection and survival outcomes in the region.

Uasin Gishu Governor Dr Jonathan Bii, EGH, has reasserted the County Governmentโ€™s assurance to revitalizing the stalled MoiSoy Farmersโ€™ Cooperative Union milling plant, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Agricultural Mechanization Services Ltd. (AMS) and the Union.

The agreement is expected to unlock progress on the long-delayed project and help cereal farmers achieve value addition through local processing.

Launched five years ago, the initiative was designed to empower farmers through collective investment. The County Government of Uasin Gishu disbursed KSh285 million to 57 cooperatives via the County Enterprises Development Fund (CEDF). Each cooperative received KSh5 million at a concessional interest rate of five percent to acquire shares in the milling plant, envisioned as a farmer-owned enterprise, and was which initially scheduled for completion within a year.

However, construction stalled at 68 percent, leaving the facility non-operational and without revenue. Loan repayment periods have since lapsed, with 38 cooperatives reaching the end of their five-year term, increasing financial strain on farmers.

Under the new arrangement, the county-owned AMS will operationalize the project through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), a structure intended to preserve farmer participation while protecting their shareholding. Farmers will retain their existing stakes and may acquire additional shares once operations begin.

Residents of Kimumu in Moiben Sub-county, Uasin Gishu County, are breathing a sigh of relief following the completion of the Sinaiโ€“Stabex drainage system, a project implemented under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program in partnership with the County Government.

For years, the area experienced recurrent flooding during heavy rains, endangering homes, disrupting daily activities, and making it difficult for children to access school safely.

The newly constructed drainage infrastructure has addressed these challenges by effectively channelling stormwater, significantly reducing the risk of flooding and restoring normalcy in the community.

With the rainy season currently underway, the projectโ€™s impact is already visible. Children can now travel to and from school without interruption, while residents continue their daily routines without fear of waterlogging.
