Child in Family Focus Child in Family Focus is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that champions family based care for orphaned & vulnerable children through care reform.

We are dedicated to ensuring that all children grow up in caring and loving families as opposed to institutions (Children Homes). The three core pillars of our work are care reform advocacy, governance monitoring as well as actual de-institutionalization efforts. We are committed to completely eradicating or reducing considerable the reliance on institutions (Children Homes) for the care and protection of children in favour of family/community strengthening, kinship care, foster care and adoption. At Child in Family Focus, all is done to God’s glory and honor. Pressing towards the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3: 14)

On 5th & 6th October, the Legacy 4 Children (L4C) Programme convened a two-day technical harmonization workshop in Machakos focused on the State Department for Children Services (SDCS) Manual on Caring for Children with Disabilities and Those with Special Needs and the Finding Value Framework.

The workshop brought together 27 professionals from SDCS, Finding Value, disability training teams and EKISA Ministries to explore a supplementary guide combining the two approaches.

Through technical sessions and group discussions, participants worked towards a clear path for the guide’s roll-out and implementation.

Children with disabilities have inherent worth and dignity. Their lives, voices and experiences matter. Together, we continue working towards inclusive, dignified and family-based care where every child is valued and supported to thrive.

On 29–30 September, CFFK brought together 10 parents and caregivers from Ngong and Kiambu for a two-day livelihood training through the Kincare Programme. The training equipped caregivers with basic business skills to help them manage the businesses they will be supported to establish.

Support should go just beyond handouts. With the right skills, resources and opportunities, families can build sustainable sources of income and greater resilience.
And because economic empowerment is also family strengthening, this helps create the stability children need to remain safely within their families.

Last week, CFFK, through the Legacy for Children (L4C) Programme, supported a series of CCI Top-Level Management Consultative Forums across Kikuyu, Juja, Murera, Ruiru and Githurai Sub-Counties, as part of ongoing government-led engagements on care reform and the transition of care.

The sessions provided CCI managers and staff with an open platform to share their thoughts, ask questions, raise concerns and interact with one another as they considered what the ongoing care reforms mean for children’s homes and their role in the transition. The sessions were intentionally designed to encourage open conversations and create space for participants to ask the questions they have about the reforms and the future of CCIs.

CFFK hopes these conversations will contribute to stronger understanding and buy-in among CCIs as stakeholders prepare to walk the transition journey together, with the best interests of children at the centre. We remain committed to supporting the State Department for Children Services and other stakeholders through resources, collaboration and spaces for honest dialogue as Kenya advances care reform and works towards a care system where every child can grow up in a safe, loving and supportive family environment.

On 18 September, CFFK through the Legacy 4 Children (L4C )Programme joined State Department for Children (SDCS) and foster parents from Kiambu and Githunguri to reflect on four years of foster care programming.

As the pilot winds down in the two sub-counties, the focus is on sustainability, peer support, family strengthening, and permanency for children.

From two sub-counties, the programme has now contributed to foster care expansion across 16 sub-counties in Kiambu County.

And through it all love and passion for the cause remains at the centre.

From 16th–18th September, we joined the State Department for Children Services, with support from Lumos , for a three-day foster parents training in Bulbul, Kajiado.

The training brought together 27 active and prospective foster parents, strengthening their skills in family-based care, trauma-informed care, the foster care process and self-care.

Through discussions, practical exercises and skits, participants turned learning into practical skills they can use in their homes and communities. When foster parents are equipped and supported, children can experience safer, more nurturing family-based care.
