Sugar Research Institute is a State Corporation status under Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) through a gazette notice No.17

SRI was established “to promote research into and investigate all problems relating to sugarcane and its manufacture into sugar and by-products, such other crops and systems of husbandry as are associated with sugarcane throughout Kenya including the productivity, quality and sustainability of land in relation to sugarcane planting, and on matters ancillary thereto”.
