After a day-long tour of Kikumbulyu North Ward that saw leaders inspect projects, commission developments and engage directly with residents, the caravan culminated in a public Baraza at Kisayani, bringing together the community and its leaders to chart a united path towards development.

The Baraza provided residents with an opportunity to meet their county government leadership, voice their concerns and present their most pressing needs directly to those entrusted with delivering services and development in the area.

Leading a delegation of leaders drawn from across Makueni County, Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. was joined by Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili, County Assembly Speaker Douglas Mbilu, Clerk Kevin Mutuku, Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), county officials and local opinion leaders.

The Governor took time to listen to residents and understand the unique challenges facing the community, emphasizing the importance of working together in addressing local development needs.
Among the key issues highlighted was water access. Governor Mutula said the county government had invested in the Athi Tunguni water project, described as the countyโ€™s biggest water project in the area, to address persistent water challenges in the ward.

The project is also expected to help reduce the communityโ€™s dependence on water sources where residents have faced increased risks of crocodile attacks.

As part of efforts to strengthen community-based economic activities, four groups were also issued with tents and chairs to support their community economic development initiatives.

The Kisayani Baraza brought the dayโ€™s activities to a close on a message of unity, partnership and collective action, with leaders and residents reaffirming the need to work together in pursuit of sustainable development for Kikumbulyu North.

The works included improvements to the existing treatment plant, including the installation of composite filtration units, cleaning of storage tanks, installation of three 100-watt solar streetlights, a chemical injector pump, painting of elevated tank components and repair of gauges.

The project also involved major electro-mechanical works at the treatment plant, including the installation of a second submersible pump and accessories, as well as construction of a 7.28-kilometre DN 200 rising main to Mukononi tanks.

A 250-cubic-metre reinforced concrete tank was constructed at Mukononi Hill to enhance water storage and distribution. The project also included distribution networks serving parts of Makindu, Kikumbulyu North and Nguumo wards.

The distribution lines included the 5.15-kilometre Mukononiโ€“Musinginiโ€“Kamboo line, the 5.1-kilometre Mukononiโ€“Kathyakaโ€“Nyayo Shopping Centre line and the 3.35-kilometre Mukononiโ€“Syumile line.

Four water kiosks were also constructed at Mukononi, Katangoo, Ilumya and Syumile (Muundani), providing residents with more accessible water points.

Speaking during the commissioning, Governor Mutula said the county government had also incorporated solar power solutions to support continuous water supply while reducing electricity costs associated with pumping and treatment.

He said the additional water interventions commissioned during the tour were part of the county government's broader efforts to improve water access in selected wards beyond Kikumbulyu North.

Through the FLLoCA programme, the county government had implemented a project to tap water from the Athi Tunguni Kilema Water Project to supplement water from Umani Springs, which had previously been supplied through a rationing programme to areas including Kingโ€™uutheni, Kitulani and surrounding communities up to Kilisa.

The intervention also extended the existing supply pipeline infrastructure to Kingโ€™uutheni and Kwa Sanga in Iviani Village, helping to improve the reliability and reach of water supply in the affected areas.

The project works is part of the county government's efforts to strengthen water infrastructure, improve storage and distribution, reduce reliance on rationing and expand access to reliable and clean water in the targeted communities.

The Governor is accompanied on the development tour by Deputy Governor, Lucy Mulili, several County Executive Committee Members, County officials, area MCA Jackson Mbalu and other members of the County Assembly led by Majority Leader, Kisungi wa Katete.
